It could be a bad XP disk or the cd-rom may be dirty or bad. Borrow an XP cd from Friend and see if it boots. If it does not boot it is the drive.

Reload the system with a disk,
You may have corrupted some files or your hard drive may have some errors, so installing it may work temporarily.
Look on the bottom of your laptop, look for a Windows COA
it will tell you your windows version e.g. Vista / 7
Maybe someone you know will have the correct disk to reinstall the system

Try cleaning the CD with dish soap and water, u may have a dirty disk, be careful (don't scratch it). Try using a different XP install disk from someone you know, just use your product key instead of theirs when it asks for it. Your install disk is failing.

Yes, you can click that Microsoft pop-up, and it will lead you through their "key-changer" software -- when requested, enter the 25-character key on the Microsoft decal on the bottom of the laptop, to "get valid".

Or, contact HP and order a set of "system restore" CD/DVD disks for your specific model -- about $20 for the disks, and $20 for shipping -- and reinstall Windows.

Or, some computers have a built-in "System Restore" partition that is "hidden" on the disk-drive. Backup your data files, and then reinstall from the files in that partition.

NO USERNAME OR PASSWORD

I will assume that you have not stolen the computer.

Remove the disk-drive, and connect it to another computer.

Copy all your data-files to the other computer, and burn CD/DVD disks,
to make a backup of your files.

Reconnect the disk-drive into the HP.

Take the original "system restore" CD-ROMs, and reinstall Windows, to return it to "factory-fresh" condition.

Reload your data files from the CDs/DVDs.
