Instructions on replacing nuvi speaker

YOu mentioned that you would post instructions on how to replace the speaker. That was back in march I think. I just noticed that the new software I added to my nuvi 360 included something to "prevent speaker blowout". Darn... Too late.
Anyway, my speaker is certainly damaged and I need to find a replacement and figure out how to open the case.
My email is thanks Jim

To clarify, I would appreciate knowing how to open up the case, perhaps with a kitchen knife or putty knife? Any disassembly hints would be appreciated. Particularly, I am interested in a source to purchase a replacement speaker.

It sounds like the speaker is mounted with adhesive - was this hard to remove.

finally, there were contradictory comments on testing the speaker: Jim mentioned 1500 K ohms for his speaker (but thought his was good) and Jim measured 7.8 ohms for his speaker (which he doesn't say but it is implied that the speaker is good). I would have thought that the speaker should be around 8 ohms.

OK Jim - this info is great. Where can I get a replacement speaker, what size torx is it, and is it a generic case separator or specific (where to get the separator?

I gather that you didn't have to much difficulty in disassembling the device without damaging the cables - I assume that careful work will prevail?

Where can I find a case separator?

    SHARCNET-USA May 11, 2010

The original poster "Bruce" said his was 1500 ohms. I (Jim), said that was too high and actually measured a working one which showed 7.8 ohms, which was probably some tolerance reading. The speaker for all practical purposes is 8 ohms.

There are specific tools to open the Nuvi (torx screwdriver & case separator). Using anything else could damage your Nuvi. The case separator tool prevents the case from being dented using any other tool that is harder than the plastic case.

There are (3) internal flex cables, (1) for the touch screen, (1) for the LCD display and (1) for the antenna. These can be damaged if your not careful. I've had several emails from people who have damaged these cables trying to get their Nuvi apart.

In the 360, there is an additional set of wires for the bluetooth condenser microphone. If you don't plug it back in the same way as you unplugged it, your mic won't work.

I have sucessfully second sourced a replacement speaker for the Nuvi and have verified that it works.

The original speaker was not hard to remove. However, the new speaker does not have wires. You will have to unsolder the wires & plug from your original speaker and solder them to the new one.

Audio gone from my gps garmin nuvi 660

If you can hear audio through the headphone jack but not the internal speaker jack, then the speaker is bad.

This is a problem I have seen many times before. I will be posting an article soon on how to replace the internal speaker, however this is not a repair that just anyone can do.

You have to have skills in dissassembly & soldering.

Nuvi 350 blown speaker

When you tap the GPS it is probably doing one of two things:

1. The tapping is temporarily reconnecting the broken voice coil in the speaker (speaker will need to be replaced)

2. The tapping is temporarily reconnecting a bad solder joint from the GPS motherboard to the speaker. (The solder joint will need to be resoldered)

You can either send the unit back for repair or purchase a FM modulator and retrieve the audio through your FM car stereo.

You can purchase an external FM modulator like those used on IPODS and CD players. I am using one on my Nuvi 350 and it works well. Just plug it into the headphone jack. Advice: Be sure to buy one that is crystal (PLL) controlled and NOT using a tuning dial. The FM modulators that use a tuning dial often tend to drift and they will also change frequency when you hit a bump in the road.
If you decide to send it back for repair, be sure to have your serial number handy. Register it online
if you haven't already done so.
