    My Radio wont turn on!

  • Anonymous Nov 17, 2008

I have a sportster 4 sp4 that intermittently loses the antenna. It happens in the car, home and boombox, so I know it's the unit. For the last few months, I could wiggled it a little or simply remove and replace it, but now it doesn't make any connection at all. Now it doesn't always power up. I am convinced it's the connector jack on the unit and not the docks. I am just out of warranty, so I am not sure where to take it. Any thoughts?? The worse part is that there is only one source for the radio - Sirius - so there is no competion. I had a Sportster replay but that also had a problem and Sirius replaced that under warranty last year. Very disappointing. The unit is in perfect condition without even one little scratch.

The issue will have to be the sportster unit. It would be too much of a coincidence for bothe the car cradle and Boom-Box to have something wrong with them. I have seen this before...most of the time, the connections on the sportster will have a bad solder joint. This will cause it to turn on and off intermittently. You can confirm this by wiggling the unit when it is docked and getting it to turn on and off. This is not something that would be easy to repair as you will want an electronics repair to fix. The Sportster comes with a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer, so if it is covered, then you can get a new tuner and apply your old subscription to the new one.

Hi Glenn,
Understandably frustrating, but it sounds like an easy fix.
First, go through the settings on your radio to be certain that nothing was set incorrectly.
Second, make sure your antenna wire is not malfunctioned or tampered with. Broken pins can render an antenna useless. These satellite radio antennae are fairly cheap to purchase on their own, so you could try purchasing a new one and see if it works.
If that's fine, open the receiver. Generally these radio's use small torx or philips screws. Once opened, check the area where the antenna is plugged in - is the lead/wire broken? Is the solder coming off? All of this can be fixed easily if spotted. You can even solder the antenna permanently on if you like.

My Sony CFD SO1 keeps skipping/display light keeps flashing

That is an electronic problem. Probably a just-about-to-break cable in the motor of the CD drive, that sometimes causes a short and turns off the unit, or sometimes makes it to comport erratically and produce the buzzy sound. If you have electronics knowledge, then you may open and check the wiring harnesses. If don't, take it to your local electronics repair.

My sirius radio sportster works sometimes and others doesn't

Buy radio shack electronic contact cleaner (in a can) and spray a small amount on the male connector from the antenna wire, and spray a small amount on the male connector in the base of the Sportster that the sportster interfaces with. Place the antenna connector onto the base unit and remove it several times and swirl it while connected. Place the sportster into and remove it from the base several times. This usually will fix the issue. Sat signals are extremely sensitive to the slightest oxidation or dirt or whaterver on that tiny antenna connection point.

Sportster randomly turns off.

Remove the batteries from the boombox. If there is no batteries in the boombox, and it still does this, then the boombox itself is no longer any good.
