This problem occurs when the PSU SCR overheats. Its located on the right hand side of the board. The design of the unit didn't allow for a large enough heat sink on this SCR. So it burns out over time, charing the board and often the components around it.

Replace it (STRG635A) and add a substantial heatsink. A piece of aluminium strip of about 1"x 2" bent over at right angles. Use heat sink compound to mate the surfaces and bolt them together. This will provide more than ample heat sinking.

Depending on the state of the resistors near by you may need to replace them as well.

Note: If you don't know how to solder then get it done as to much heat here will fry the tracks and make the whole thing irrepairable.

I had same problem, there iis a resistor 0,47 ohm around STR IC, and i found it's resistance increased, probably due to heating. I just added 1.5 ohm another resistor in parallel with existing 0.47 ohm, and unit work fine..
The voltage developed on this resistor serves as overload information for STR to stop oscillating, for security puposes...

I had the same problem with both of my recorders, had extended warranty on them and had them repaired by a service agent. The problem turned out to be a faulty STRG6353A IC chopper (voltage regulator) on both units.

Sounds like a faulty diode on the power supply. If you know a bit about electronics then investigate, if not find a competant technician. Good luck.

Ihave dmr-e55 it records advd for 5 minutes and it goes to self check

1) Press and keep [POWER] button on the unit for more than 10 seconds
to turn off the power of the unit.

2) Unplug power cord and wait for approx. 1 minute.

3) Plug power cord in.

4) The display shows [RECOVER] or [SELF CHECK] and it becomes under
recovery. Wait till the message on display disappears.

*When the unit does not recover after taking above procedures (1 to
4), it is needed to be checked and repaired.

Self checking

I have had a Panasonic DMR-E85 with this exact same problem you are describing. As I bought a Freeview Dual-tuner PVR I just bought a second-hand DMR-E55 as I liked the Panasonic interface. Two months down the line it is now exhibiting the exact same problems, except now as well as the continual self-check rebooting, it's also refusing to eject the disk. Booo. Time for me to buy a new DVD recorder again, and this time certainly not Panasonic... :(

Recorder keeps 'self checking' then taking dvd back to begining, although only on recordable dvd's, not rented. Are recorders worth repairing or are you better just buying another?

Panasonic DMR-ES15 DVD recorder startup failure

The unit failed during self check, probably the power regulation board. A check by a qualified TV/VCR repair person is in order.

Pan. dmr-e85h turned itself on, self-check

Open case and look for failed capacitors, which are cylindrical and will have a bulging top and a yellow/gold substance leaking out. If this is the problem, search for previous solutions that mention "solder capacitor C1260" for the DMR-E85. I had a similar 'no power' problem with my DMR-E55 and my son and I were able to fix it Sunday. Not hard to do and mine is working again!

Will my non finalzied discs play on a panasonic ez 28 or ex 768

You will have no problem playing your non finalized discs on any of the Panasonic DMR range including the DMR EZ28 series. The DMR E55 can also easily be repaired if you can use a soldering iron and a little care. Please checkout my other postings for full repair details.

Remote controle

Easy to fix. The DMR E55 has 3 remote control code settings and your remote can be set for any one of them. The error you are getting at the moment means that your remote is set for one code but your DMR E55 is set for another. Why do Panasonic do this? The reason that Panasonic do this, is because if you have several Panasonic units, you can operate one of them from your remote without all of them responding at the same time. Ok, so how is it fixed? Turn on your DMR E55 and press FUNCTIONS then select SETUP. Then select OTHERS. You will see the remote option on the right which will say DVD 1 or DVD 2 or DVD 3, Try setting it to a different code and press return. You should get it to work...
