If it just fails to turn on, the main power supply is probably at fault and without some technical background and a couple of test instruments, you will not be able to do the repair yourself.
What you can do though is; unplug the set, remove the back panel and look for a separate board with mostly larger components on it; it will have a ferrite core transformer on it and several larger capacitors which are cylindrical and mounted vertically to the board. Before touching anything inside, especially on that board, allow several hours to be safe since the larger capacitors can hold a painful voltage charge for some hours.   If you see signs of overheating such as discoloration of the board material, it may not be repairable but if you can find a part number on the board, you might be able to buy it and install it yourself. If there are no signs of heat damage to the board, there may be companies offering to repair it as a subassembly instead of repairing the whole set which could be much more expensive.

I have a Zenith Z25X31D TV that I was watching and all of the sudden it went dead. There was a horrible smell that emitted from the TV just seconds later. I removed the cabinet back and near the...

You have just described, better than most, exactly what had happened. The disc ceramic capacitor has failed and gone pop. If you can read the value and replace it, I feel sure the tv will last for another few years.
It is a tuning capacitor probably 1nF at 6KV. It is probably sat in parralel with the line output transistor, Collector to Emmiter. If it is then 1nF at more than 3KV will work.

A large pop happened, resulting in no picture,no sound has only been used for less than a year

The loud pop was a faulty capacitor(s) arcing when threshold voltage is applied too it. Or send the board too my ahop and I will repair it for you. If this helps please rate....thank you:-)

When I use the remote to turn the television on, nothing happens.

This problems happen to all LCD and Plasma tvs.In to 1 or 2 maybe 3 to 4 years old in used. The power supply board have these componnents parts call the capacitors,it will started to bulges up on it top,or puff up on it top. These capacitors are leaking gases and it dead. The tv will not power up and the LED power lite indicator start continuous flashing LED light.U know basic electronic's and soldering?Take the tv aparts where the power cord plug into it that ur power supply board.Searches all around the power supply board and it supporting boards, replaced all those dead gas leakage capacitors.Ur tv will power up normal again and work.Or Tries websites like Shopjimmy.com,Ebay.com to buy a whole refurbish power supply board for the replacement.

My protron 32" lcd tv was playing and just died no power. I tried unplugging the tv to reset and nothing happen

Your power supply is dead. You can get one from POWER-ON.COM for about $64.00 including shipping and handling. My 32 inch went dead after only one year and I just got a new power supply and it works fine.

on the back of the TV where the power cord plugs into the back of the tv there is a small black on/off switch- it's not as obvious as you would think.... but that was turned off. Not sure how that happened since the back of the Tv was never touched when it went dead- but I unplugged the cord from the back of the tv and from the outlet and reset that switch and it worked.
