Question about Maytag Legacy Series Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Washer won't spin or agitate

My Maytag washer will not spin or agitate. I can hear the motor running but the tub will not move. I have checked the belts and they seem to be fine. The pulleys will move by hand very easily however the tub will not budge. Any suggestions you could offer would be greatly appreciated. I am ready to take a sledge hammer to the thing. Not that I think it would help, but I would feel better. won't agitate or spin, but motor is going.

SOURCE: washer won't spin or agitate

On this model the motor turns one way for spin and the other for agitation. This action is controlled by a thrust bearing located just undernieth the plastic cap on the center pully. Many people are thrown off thinking a transmission problem when it's actually this thrust bearing kit. However, it could be the trans. If so you have a 5 year warranty on it, part only. There is also a number of service flashes on this model including: snubber kit, flash number 26-756, which has to do with vibration during spin. Things you want to make sure of is that the pump is not seized up, leakage from the center tub on to the bearing and brake. You may want to call Maytag and inquire about the service flashes on this model, you could be covered. Other than that my guess without seeing it would be the thrust bearing kit, part number 12500036. Not a bad job, the kit comes with instructions. The hardest part is getting that last washer on. Catriver...Post back.

The drive motor which spins the drum is connected to the drum by a rubber belt. Sounds like the belt is burned through. Make sure you can spin the inside tub by hand to verify that the tub can turn freely before you replace the belt. The hum is from the drive motor just spinning freely.

Maytag washer tub will not spin.

There is a clutch assembly under the tub that controls the tub and the agitator. It sounds like the problem is with that.

My roper top load washer model rtw4440vq fills with water but wont wash, spin or drain

see this causes and fix it. God bless you
Motor Coupling If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor coupling might have failed. The motor coupling connects the motor to the washer transmission. It is designed to fail if the washer is overloaded in order to protect both the motor and
Drive Belt If the washer won't spin or agitate, check the drive belt. If the belt is broken or if it isn't tight on the pulleys the washer won't spin or agitate properly.

Drive Motor If the washer won't spin or agitate the drive motor might be defective. This is not common. Check all of the other related parts to this symptom before replacing the motor. If the motor is visibly burned out or physically damaged, replace it.

Stator Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the stator assembly might be burned out. The stator is essentially one half of a motor, it interacts with the tub by creating a strong electro-magnet. If the stator burns out the washer won't spin or agitate. Check the stator for continuity. This part is often misdiagnosed.

Door or Lid Latch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the lid switch assembly might be defective. This is a very common problem. The lid switch assembly can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any electrical switches with an Ohm meter for continuity. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Door Lock Motor and Switch Assembly If the washer won't spin or agitate the door lock assembly should be checked. The door lock can fail either mechanically or electrically. Test any switches on the door lock with an Ohm meter. The switches should have continuity according to their design.

Motor Control Board If the washer won't spin or agitate the motor control board might be defective. The motor control board provides power to the motor as well as direction and force. If the motor control board is defective the washer may not work at all or function properly.

Maytag performa stops during agitate or spin

All washers have a safety switch on the on lid. There is usually a slot that a plastic pin goes into to activate the switch. These switches are high failure parts. The switch is located on the underside of the top deck. It should check 0 ohms when closed. You can also jump it but then it would NOT stop when the lid is open ie; during agitation or spin cycle ( a safety hazard).

Washer makes grinding/loud sound and will not agitate-spins fine

Look under the washer. Is there a little pile of black rubber shavings? This sounds like the basket coupler between the motor and the drum. If the coupler is the problem it is inexpensive to fix. Some also call this part the "clutch". It kind of looks like a hockey puck with six holes in it... three for the motor, three for the clothes drum. In your case, I suspect that the holes are intact in the direction of spin, but as soon as it reverses for agitation, it breaks out through the back of the holes.

Will not spin hear it spinning but tub does not spin

If you are hearing the motor spin but the tub doesn't, then the motor coupling is bad. The coupling goes between the motor and transmission and enables the transmission to spin or agitate. You're going to have to open up the machine so you can access the motor. Then you will have to disconnect the motor and you will see the coupling.

MAYTAG TOP LOADER BARREL NOT SPINNING

Peace,
ngafm at your service,

It pumps, but doesn't spin If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

* The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

* The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

* A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

* The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

* The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

* The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

* The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.

It spins only with the lid closed For safety, washing machines are made so that they spin only with the lid closed. The lid switch prevents the spinning action when the lid is up."

Washer won't spin

Could be a worn belt,
Empty the machine and tilt backwards, you may need some help to do this.
Remove the belt and check, some times these appear OK but may have stretched.
Chech the agitator pully, try to rotate, will only move in one direction, see agitator moving as you do, get the person helping you to see this.
Check the motor moves freely on the tensioner, motor will appear to move 2".
Fit a new belt and try.
