Question about Dell Inspiron 8100 Notebook

1 Answer

Can I use a 1978u replicator with my 8100 if I remove the locking arm?

The 8100 physically attaches to the replicator properly [I did remove the arm] but I am concerned about the electronics and have not powered on the notebook with the notebook attached. My notebook uses the PA-6 power supply as does the 1978u.

Try to turn it on ... it should have no problem with the "electronics"

if you got message that the docking is not compatible, then you will have to flash your notebook bios to the latest 8100 BIOS.

If same case still happen after updating your BIOS, use C840 bios (which AFAIK will not harm your notebook). It will then read the docking/port replicator correctly.

Both BIOS can be found here

Give it a shot ...

Hello Eleanor,

By your question I can not tell if you have used the docking station or not so here is the removal procedure for a Hi Speed Port Replicator II
To disconnect the Port Replicator, follow the steps below.
1. Set the computer lock to the unlock position.
2. Make sure you perform
one of the following:
• Save all your work.
• Turn off the computer's power in any mode: boot, suspend or hibernation.
• Perform any software disconnect operation required by the operating
system.
• Press the eject switch.
CAUTION:
Make sure the Eject LED is out. Do not try to disconnect the
computer while the Eject LED is glowing.
3. Pull the eject lever out towards you to disconnect the computer.
4. Lift off the computer

Now if there are further problems or this did not help you please post further information like at what step did the station not perform correctly. Hope this helped.

Cursor moves on its own when Lenovo Thinkpad is connected to DisplayLink port replicator

The port replicator needs to have the drivers installed in order for it to work properly. If this was not done, you will need to do it. Windows does not have the correct drivers for it.

My IBM ThinkPad has shut down and won't turn back on. What can I do to get it to start-up.

Hi,

I suggest try to isolate the problem first what could be the cause, If its software or hardware. I suggest try doing these steps and see if it works.

NO POWER

1. Verify the status indicator.
The power status indicator anespera.gif is illuminated whenever the computer is on.

2.Check all power connections.

3. Inspect the AC Adapter
See if there are physical damage, and ensure the power cable is firmly attached to the power brick and the system.

4. Remove the machine from any docking station or port replicator.

5. Remove all devices and then test for system power with minimal devices attached.

You might need these things; Philips Screw Driver, Tweezer and any Flat Bladed tool.

5.1. Disconnect the AC adapter.

5.2. Remove the battery pack.

5.3. Remove any externally or internally installed options and other devices.

5.3a. Remove the memory module (DIMM).

5.3b. Remove the Mini PCI and Communications Daughter Cards if applicable.

5.3c. Remove the Ultrabay devices, usually CD-ROM, CD-RW, or DVD drives, that are customer replaceable.

5.3d. Remove the hard drive.

4. Wait for 30 seconds before reconnecting the devices and power sources.

5. Reinstall only the memory DIMM and the known good battery pack or AC adapter to test the system with minimal devices attached first.

6. Reinstall each device one at a time that was removed in the steps above.

NOTE:

If happens you're not comfortable doing those steps I suggest try to get help from someone who's capable doing those steps or go to any local computer center.

Hope it helps.

My notebook has a white screen.what do i do.its an Asus .. nonparallel85@gmail.com

Hi there,

If your system wont boot up and has a white screen it might caused by a display issue. There are some ways on how to diagnose if this problem is a software or hardware problem. You can do a power drain or you could also access the bios to replicate if you have the same problem. Here are some basic troubleshooting that you can apply for this particular issue.

1. Turn off the computer.

2. Now unplug all physical connections. Remove the AC adapter from the power outlet. Also remove the battery from the system.

3. After removing both AC adapter and battery, please press the power button for 15-20 seconds.

4. Put back again the AC adapter and battery then power on the system.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

My cd drive wont open or read disks anymore what can i do to fix this?

If its not reading your CD any longer, you will need a new CD Rom drive. If it not opening either, the power to it needs replaced which is the whole unit.

The key tops on my laptop Pavillion are loose and keep coming off

There are 2 little attachment arms on the bottom of the keys. Use a very small electronics screwdriver to make sure both arms get attached. If the arms are missing then you'd have to find another machine for parts to get the attachment pieces. It's tricky and a pain to attach but it will. I have 3 HP Pavillions and have had to do this several times.

Dell 8100 ethernet will not connect off the port replicator

Let me give it a try ...

There are a few possibilities but i'll cover 2 of them :
1. There is a program that comes with your DELL that will save battery life by turning off your Network Card (LAN) I forgot what is the program name. But usually when you plug the power cable out, there will be notification at bottom right corner of your screen that told you so.

2. I don't know if your port replicator connected to power adapter (is port replicator = docking ?). The fact that your LAN connected when it's on port replicator make my first conclusion more acceptable. Since port replicator got it's own power adapter, it will just turn the LAN on.

Now if you want to check if thats the cause, just plug your notebook to it's power adapter/charger and plug your LAN Cable in. If it works than the problem is the nasty program from DELL.

If you want to disable the program just go to Startup Tab at msconfig and disable (clear the check mark) for that nasty program

Hope it helps
