2,3 is a deflection circuit failure; These sets rarely have soldering problems there or elsewhere.
I would suggest either it is a shorted part in that area (High Voltage and sweep circuits) or it is possible it could be a Glycol issue.
A deflection circuit problem would require a schematic (widely available on internet for free) and a meter to check for voltages and or for shorts.
Glycol can be inspected for visually and if seen care must be taken.
Let me know if you have questions.
Last suggestion would be if you have not done it, unplug set (this clears the error buffer) and plug back and turn set on, if it fails double check the error code again.
Steve J.
thank you Steve. With the glycol issue what exactly am I to look for?
First, Glycol is a clear liquid and each of the three picture tubes has a sealed area full of it to keep the face of each tube cool.
It is toxic! and more concentrated than anti freeze!
To inspect for it pull the entire front speaker grill off (almost all have plastic pegs that hold them in (A few of the Medallion series have two smaller grills)
with it removed there is an inspection plate behind it dead center, remove that.
You will be able to see the three large circuit boards. (set unplugged)
Look closely with a flashlight, if there is glycol you will see signs of it on the front 3 inches of one or more of those boards.
It will not look like water but is clear and will look like either model airplane glue or parts that should have bright leads will look discolored.
If you see any signs of it DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH YOUR HAND, THIS stuff is ten times more toxic than antifreeze and will be absorbed into your skin if touched.
YOu have to look carefully, only a tiny amount can cause real problems and as you look from front board on far left is power and deflection, middle is power, convergence, and vertical sweep. Board on far right is signal/control and is green in color (other two boards are usually tan but can be different color.)
Hello again Steve. it has taken me a little time to get back to my parents tv. I didn't mention before that they have two of these tv sets, only one of them is having a problem but anyway I've checked out the Glycol and that may be one of the issue as well as a few copasiters that look as if they are leaking a white substances out of them ( 3 all together all in different locations. would it be possible to send you some pics and have you confirm what I'm seeing?
This site has just undergone a large change so photos can only be posted by expert the first time he answers.
Some suggestions if both are the same model----from front or rear look to see if under the tubes (just above where the necks stick down) is there a plastic tray?
Some models had a tray to catch Glycol, if it has a tray the only way the Glycol could leak is if set was tilted forward for it to spill out.
If no tray in either set there is a stupid but EFFECTIVE counter measure: We used to suggest and did this------cut a piece of cardboard and from rear insert it beneath tubes at an angle down towards the front of the set inside---away from the circuit boards and on the pressed wood cabinet---it will not create any heat or other problems and you can inspect from time to time from the front of the set to see if any glycol drips on it.
If both have the Glycol catch tray as I mentioned only tilting the set could cause the tray to leak Glycol onto the circuit boards.
As far as photos since the option to do that does not exist here: take photos and use something like Photobucket and send a URL of the page for me to see them.
An Yahoo email address would also work BUT I AM NOT ALLOWED HERE to ask for that.................
Tray or no tray?
Puffed out or leaking caps?
Just so you know this set has also what is called a light box----if you look from back it will either be plastic (black) with handles or pressed wood with hand holds cut into it on each side------idea is entire guts of set can be removed and worked on out of the cabinet---ten minutes to get it out----if set has a tray and box is removed you have to be careful not to tilt box.
