Question about Sony Grand WEGA KDF-50WE655 50" Rear Projection HDTV

1 Answer

Blue line problem with Sony Grand WEGA KDF-55WF655 Rear Projection TV.

I have been reading about other people that have the blue line problem with similar models. My TV is a 2004 and I realize that Sony will replace the Optical Block if this is the diagnosis. Is there anyone that has experienced this blue line problem that had it repaired? Did it turn out to be the optical block? I do not have the blue dot or haze issue...mine is a blue line that runs from the left to just over half way across the screen and it is getting worse. It develops after the TV has been on for a short period of time at the top edge of a wide screen movie lower bar or other stationary object at the bottom of the screen. Any time a scene or picture is stationary for an extended period of time, a blue witness line will appear around the stationary picture. If the TV is turned off for a period of time, the lines will disappear and reappear when another stationary picture appears.

Has anyone experienced this, attempted to repair it and found that it was in fact the Optical block? Sony believes it is probably the Optical block but I have not actually taken the TV in for diagnosis yet. They offered me the TV deal as well, but I have several reasons to stay with the current TV.

Any help with this topic would be appreciated.

Kind regards,
Chris Masterson

The blue haze appears after the tv has been on for a short time in the left lower corner of the screenand extends about halfway actross the screen. If you examine the blueline close up it appears tp to a ghost pattern from a stationary display or tool bar type image that is bleeding through after it geats warmed up. For example, if I put the DirecTv menu up for a few minutes, it seems to remeber the pattern in the left hand corner of the screen that was there when the menu was up. If I change the screen to something else it remembers that image.

We had the free repair from SONY for the blue dots and splotches. It works great now but you need to hurry and contact them as the offer expires I believe in December.

This works with the two other colors, blue and green also. Not all models of Sony Projection
TVs have the red, green, and blue pots in the same order as the picture that is listed on
this link, so you may want to google search for your model's service manual. The service
manual can also help you be able to remove the cover for your particular model of TV. I was
able to find the service manual for my model, and sure enough, the order of the pots are
reversed on mine, so I would have been adjusting the wrong color. Read all of the comments
on this link too, because you can find other helpful tips and may even find someone with the
same model of TV as you that gives more specific instructions for your model.

P.S. You can also clean the mirrors and dry dust while you're in there which can help with blurriness and focus.

This worked for my Sony Projection TV that periodically would have sound but no picture. I also had the retrace lines. I think the problems are related. As I stated above, you have nothing to lose, so it's worth a try!!

Try to find your model's service manual on the sony site here:

You can also google for the manual. The service manual, not to be confused with the owner/user guide, tells you how to replace parts and perform maintenance.

Blue Screen and TV shuts off

Here's a shortcut to what the blinking codes mean.
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/08/sony-tv-led-blinking-codes-what-does-it.html
Strange how some people have 5 blinks. Most with this problem have 8 blinks (like myself)

I still have the blue-flash-then-shutting-off problem.. (8 blinks meaning voltage error) but I did fix the blue lines.. The lines across the screen can be very easily fixed whether they're blue green or red. . No, I mean REALLY easy. Took me longer to get the cover off. Once the front cover is off it takes 10 seconds. This link was also posted recently in one of the posts below as a solution..
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html
(My lines didn't look like the ones in the picture mine were several evenly spaced blue arcs)

After some research I believe the flash/shutting off problem means the CRT is going. I've also read that it might be the D-board and I'm not even sure that that is... But If it is indeed the CRT then I'll let you know it's very difficult to find a replacement blue CRT as this part has been discontinued.. but I did eventually find an alternate to an alternate part (yes that's the 3rd alternate !)) online for $256. Here: http://store.tv-repair-service-salinas.com/8-733-649-35.html

If you're bold enough to attempt that then good luck and please let us know if it worked.
Or another alternative is there's a whole lot of Boxing Day sales goin' on right now.
