Question about Kenmore 23612 Progressive PowerMate Bagged Canister Vacuum

1 Answer

Agitator brush not working

I have a Kenmore Progressive Vacuum Cleaner Model 116.22612-05 that sucks but does not agitate when button on carpet mode. I then tried hooking up to Powermate Jr. and the same thing happens. There is probably a short but in what part? Is it the selector switch or the hose attachment that needs to be replaced or something else?

I went ahead and ordered a switch and wire harness from Sears Parts online(using repair parts list that came with vacuum cleaner) which cost me about $45.00 including shipping. After receiving the parts I first tried replacing the switch and no difference. Then I changed the wire harness that contains the receptacle where the plug from the extension wand plugs in. Sure enough, that solved the problem! Apparently the plug receptacle was worn out causing the short. It took some effort to get the Handle Assembly apart and then back together; however, I did it and broke nothing! I am so stoked as I know I probably saved at least $100.00 by doing this myself!! And if I were to send the switch back, my cost would only be about $30.00!

It is amazing what a person can do when using the parts list that came with the appliance and the internet to order parts!!!!

Agitator doesnt turn

There is actually a reset button on the agitator, I would try pushing this switch first to see if this fixes it. The button is located on one of the sides of the agitator housing, I'm not sure if it's the left or the right side, or on the top of it.

Look on the sides of the part of the vacuum that is on the floor and see if you can see a small red pole on either side. If you can't find it here, look on the top of the part of the vacuum that touches the floor for a brush overload reset switch.

Try pushing that poll whenever you find it. This switch is a protection mechanism that will shut the brushes down to protect them if something gets vacuum up inside of the brush, it will automatically shut itself off to prevent any damage.

Simply push this overload switch down, and this should hopefully fix your problem.

If this didn't, please let me know and I can walk you through some more advanced troubleshooting.

If this was helpful, please be so kind and rate my repair, or leave feedback.

Thank you!

Sweeping part of the vacuum stopped spinning.

Is the belt stretched or broken? There needs to be a (not-stretched and not broken) belt connecting the rotating brush (agitator) to the motor pulley on the vacuum.

Brush won't turn

The Agitator Overload switch is located on the top of the base assembly. Unplug the vacuum and press the reset button. The vacuum also has thermal protection, which will reset itself once the vacuum cools. The agitator will also stop when the vacuum is in the full upright position.

You can check for the manual at:

I would suggest checking the hoses for clogs. Especially the hose right after the carpet brushes. Don't forget to clean off your brush. Hope this helps.

Kenmore Progressive Model # 116 25914507

I had the same problem with my vacuum. I called in for technical service and was told to push the "reset button". It turns out that there is a small red button right next to the dirt indicator light. I pushed the button, plugged the vacuum back in and started it up and it worked like a charm! :) Hope this helps!
