Got an error code 5E00:021F

The error code suggests you can not get a response from the USB stick. Try another stick, try another port with the stick you have. Test the port where the stick did not operate with yet another stick. Check the device manager's report of the status of the driver for the device. Sadly, you have to test to see if you have a bad stick, a bad port, a bad driver! Run chkdsk. Run something like Speccy to see if it pulls up any information about the usb stick (with such inserted).

You essentially try to discover if the problem is with the stick itself or rather with the computer and or drivers. Here are some links to software that test USB sticks: https://www.raymond.cc/blog/how-to-check-and-test-usb-flash-drive/

If the problem is with Dell hardware, you might have to contact Dell. Dell has its own diagnostic programs you can try. http://nccumc.org/it/faq/how-to-run-hardware-diagnostics/

Of course a dreaded destructive recovery to factory defaults can often solve some of these problems. I would certainly try to access a system restore point pre-dating your problem before considering such an undesirable alternative. Research the error code on Dell's site; but I suspect it is general enough that there is not a ready answer.

If all you want to do is remove/replace memory and hard drives no teardown of the is needed. Power down and unplug the computer.
*Remove the side cover. With a standard retail computer this can be a bit confusing; some have two screws on the rear of that side and the cover pops off. Others have hidden snaps or catches and the side comes off.
*Hard drives have either side screws holding them in, or some such as older Dells have plastic tabs that you gently pull out and the drive is free. Unplug the two cables on the drive.
*Memory: there are two small thumb snaps on each end of the memory stick that you push down and the memory pops free. Be careful replacing the sticks! Carefully line up the slot on the mounting socket on the motherboard with the plastic ridge on the stick, and press down firmly, first on one end and then on the other. You will see the small thumb snaps pop up as the stick settles in to the slot. Make sure the thumb snaps are fully upright, same as originally were.

Plse can u run thru the procedure to set up my new purchase pny 4gb flashdrive??

Most flashdrives (aka pen drives or usb sticks) do not require installation. They are a storage device that you add information to. If you could post your OS (either XP, Vista, Linux or Mac OS X) we can go through the process of adding and reading information from the drive.

I'm guessing it's something with IE 7. Is there a little information bar (yellow) across the top of the browser's viewable area? If so, click on it and look at your options.

Memory stick

Hi Amanda,

All USB memory sticks/flashdrives uses the internal power supply of the device it is attached to (such as your DVD Rec/Player and your son's laptop). Having said that, once it is plug it is then made into an integral part of the device, if something is electrically wrong with it, the flashdrive will bring the whole device down. Technically, I suspect that the flashdrive has an internal short grounding the supply line. This is the "+5VDC rail" as we call it.

If you are seeking the services of an on-site repair person, it might help that this information be relayed to him/her as it will narrow down the diagnosis to the power supply section, fusible links/resistors, regulators and others of the sort.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
