Hi Dale,

Several factors can contribute to spark plug fouling:

- The air/fuel ratio may be too rich as a result of incorrect carburetor adjustment or a poorly performing fuel injection system.
- Worn piston rings or valve seals may allow too much oil to leak into the combustion chamber, leading to oil fouling.
- The ignition system may not be performing properly.
- Prolonged idling or continuous low-speed driving may keep the spark plug from reaching its optimum operating temperature. Using too cold a spark plug can lead to the same problem.
- A dirty air cleaner can create a too-rich condition which can lead to fouling.

Have each of the above checked and corrected.

Fuel, oil and carbon fouling can all be the result of different causes but, once a spark plug is fouled, it will not provide adequate voltage to the firing tip and that cylinder will not fire properly.

In many cases, the spark plug cannot be cleaned sufficiently to restore normal operation. Hence, I always recommend that a plug be replace, once it becomes fouled.

Cheers,

Scott

Can a fouled plug be cleaned and if with what product

It can be cleaned and you must use a sand blaster (by far the best way to clean them) that is just for spark plugs. Another method is to use a wire brush and carburetor spray cleaned. Below is a link to the spark plug sand blaster i mentioned.

My truck seems to be running to rich on fuel when starting after it is warmed up, cold starts are fine. 1999 gmc

There is a possibility that your temperature sending unit for the computer is not working correctly. ( not the sending unit for the gage, there are two). If the computer never knows that the engine warms up, it will keep "choking" and over fueling. Thus, the black spark plugs.

I got a 1999 gmc suburban and the number 6 spark plug keeps fouling out replaced the injector what could be the problem

what is it fouling with. If its fuel check spark and plug--if it's oil-more serious- could be valve guides or seal or worse could be an oil ring. Either way it is going to be expensive.

Truck getting too much gas. 94 GMC Sonoma. V6 engine. Black smoke out exaust. Plugs keep fouling out. I Changed everything fuel related plus computer under dash board. Truck not starting now. HELP.

Did you check sensors such as crank senors? cam sensor? knock sensor? or mass air flow? Could all be causing it to get to much fuel. Just had same problem on 1997 Chevy Lumina

Spark plugs are fouling out on my 95 buick riviera. it is a 95 with a 2000 replacement motor. I have replaced the spark plugs and cleaned up. It will run for a little bit but is back fouling out within...

Build up on the spark plugs due to dirty oil being used. Maybe before selling it to you. Some other problems could be happening. for example, Bad fuel, bad timing etc.
