Trackball only moves left, right and up, no down movement. It's off and on, but it can be really annoying if you are trying to scroll fast. I still have not fixed this problem. Any hints on how to repair it?

Whoever was posting that blog must have either being Talkin a load of garbage or they had a one in a million bad quality HTC Phone..

the G1 is Really High quality, yeah the phone is all plastic, but so what !? it looks amazing, it feels really solid and robust in the hand and the back of the phone has a slight tactile texture which makes it firm in your hand. the plastics are really high quality throughout and there is nothing wrong with the hardware at all !

My phone has been switched off for time, and it turned on but for some reason the joy stick isnt working

Hi, if your track ball is not working, it might be because of a buildup of dirt, which obscures the sensor wheels. Cleaning the trackball will fix the problem, and can be done without any special tools or knowledge. After cleaning the trackball, your BlackBerry 8310 should be returned to a good working condition.

  • Lift off the plastic ring around the trackball using the screwdriver. Place the screwdriver under the outer edge of the ring and carefully lift it out. You do not need to use a lot of pressure, as the ring should click out easily.
  • Lift the trackball out of the Blackberry. Raise the white tabs with the screwdriver to lift the ball component out of the trackball. Be sure to keep all pieces safe during this process, as losing one may render the trackball unusable.
  • First, wipe the trackball with a dry cloth to remove the larger particles of dirt. Then, dip the cloth in the cleaning fluid and rub the ball with it. This should lift off any ground-in dirt that has accumulated.
  • Leave to dry for a minute or two, then reverse the removal process. Ensure that the ball lines up with the sensors on the component, marked by the white guides. Click the trackball and the ring back into place. Your trackball should now function properly.
  • Repeat the process once a month, or every time the trackball's performance begins to falter. Trackballs easily pick up dirt and sweat from fingers, which cause them to become clogged. Regular maintenance will help prevent any major damage

I have a blackberry phone and the cursor on the phone don't go down, only sideways and up

The problem you describe is a common occurrence with all BlackBerry phones with a trackball. The cause of this is a build-up of dirt, dust, lint and debris that gets trapped under the trackball. Over time, the build-up fuses together with the natural oils on our fingers as we spin the trackball. This leads to small chunks of dirt trapped that get big enough to prevent the trackball from spinning in a given direction - and sometimes even from being able to press down on it to make a selection.
To fix this, you will need the following items:
A. BlackBerry (with Trackball) B. Small, flathead screwdriver (Jeweler's driver) C. Toothpick (1) D. Lint-free cleaning cloth (or toilet paper/napkin) E. Q-tip (2)
1. Power off the BB and remove the battery cover and battery 2. With the phone facing you, insert the small, flathead screwdriver between the outside of the chrome track ring and the edge of the plastic phone face. 3. Slowly apply pressure downward, as if you were trying to open a can of paint. 4. There are 3 tiny clips that hold the track ring in place. Slowly wedge around until all three have been loosened. (Be careful as these are extremely fragile pieces and if they break, there's no repairing it, only replacement). 5. Once you remove the track ring, you can easily remove the trackball. 6. Look inside the the hole where the trackball was and if you spot any "gunk" or build-up, use the toothpick to flush it out. (Be careful not to damage the expose logic board) 7. Once any build-up has been removed, take the trackball and using a Q-tip, gently roll the ball around while also pushing the ball in, so as to free any trapped debris. 8. After a few swabs and after any visible gunk has been removed, insert the trackball and then the chrome ring, carefully! 9. Roll the trackball around and check for any blockage. 10. If there is blockage, disassemble the trackball and track ring again and repeat steps 6-8 until clean. 11. Once clean & reassembled, insert the battery and battery cover and power the BB on. 12. Check/re-check scrolling and selecting with the trackball, verifying that it works correctly.

3.If not happening contact service center as there might be any hardware problem.

Rollerball only up not down

Sometimes the trackballs get stuck from pressing too hard and putting it slightly out of alingment, or grime. The first thing to try is to put slight pressure on the silver ring around the trackball and make sure it is seated properly as they sometimes pop out of the joint. You can put pressure on it with your fingernail or use a small screwdriver, and apply gentle pressure on the North, South, East, and West area of the silver ring. Then try rolling the ball around back and forth to get it centered. If that doesn't fix the problem then you might try cleaning. It sounds difficult but it isn't.

To Clean:

1. Using either your fingernail or tiny glasses repair screwdriver pry off the trackball faux chrome plastic cover. Do this gently and very carefully, it's lightweight plastic so you don't want to break it.

2. Under the silver cover you will see the white plastic housing the ball sits in, this is the trackball assembly. Look for lint and other grime around the outer edge of your trackball assembly. Also write down how everything looks to help you remember when you put it back together.
3. Carefully pry up the small metallic retaining clip that sits over, and holds the trackball assembly in place. Be very careful with this ring, it's very small and you wouldn't want to lose it. Also, this clip bends pretty easily, make sure you don't bend or distort the piece.

4. Remove the trackball assembly. If you use a magnetic tip screwdriver you can place the tip on the assembly and it will attract the magnetic rollers.

5. Put the trackball assembly in a safe place while you work. Note the metal tab appears to be pointing down, this is the side that should be towards the keypad, or lower half of the phone when putting it back together.

6. Get some alcohol and a Q-tip. You can also use canned air if you have it (I used blow dryer on cool and low setting).. Use the air on the phone and then swab the internals with your Q-tip. You should have a small amount of alcohol on the Q-tip, do not soak it! Then hit the internals with the canned air one more time to get rid anything that was dislodged by the swabbing, and dry any residual alcohol. Also swab the trackball assembly itself, and hit it with the air to dry.

7. Reassemble the trackball unit. Place the assembly in with the two side tabs on the left and right, put the bottom of the assembly with the tab pointing down. Then place the small metal retaining clip into place with the tabs to the top and bottom. Gently press this into place with your screwdriver tip and you will feel it click.

8. Final step. Place the faux chrome plastic trackball housing over the assembly with the tabs facing left, right, and down. Gently press this into place with your thumbnail. It is best to put the bottom tab into place first and then press. On trial and error I do not recommend using the screwdriver to push this into place as you may scratch the plastic.

Hopefully this put everything clean and back into alignment. If your trackball has something wrong with one of the parts you can buy a little replacement trackball kit. Good luck!

Water damage in the BB Pearl roll ball apparently and the phone company said it is not fixable slash not under the warentee. I have never spilt anything on my phone....Is it possible to be fixed?

Please specify what the phone is doing (or not doing) right. But to let you know, Most of the time, the problems with blackberries can be repair as it is a very strong phone. Unless it has gone completly under water and has died, there is a good chance you can fix the phone, specially if only the trackball has issues. Please contact me if you are in US and like to send it in for me to look at.
