First try and press and hold the FN key and then press the F4 key. The screen will disappear from the external monitor and should appear on Laptop. Try a few times and see what happens. This is a common problem and usually can either be a keying error or the back light operation of LCD screen needs replacement. Cost can vary from $70 - $150 AU. Go to ebay and find if there is a replacement for you. See how you go and let me know!

I have a TJ68 packard bell Easynote laptop, it will power up, but display screen is black and flickers. I connect a vga cable to an external monitor and can see contents of laptop on external monitor.

The fact that you can see the desktop on the external monitor means your LCD Inverter on the laptop is bad. The video card in the laptop is good, otherwise you would not be able to see the desktop on either screen.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barely see the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash light and nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card is bad.

The lcd inverter can be purchased on ebay for less than $15. It is located at the bottom of the lcd screen. You'll have to remove the plastic strip that is around the lcd screen by removing the plastic or rubber bumpers that have screws under them. Normally there will be bumpers at each corner and maybe along the insides on the plastic strip. Remove the bumpers, the screws and pry the plastic strip off with a little force with your fingers. You will then see the lcd inverter at the bottom of the lcd screen.

Just put your computer's name and model in the ebay search followed by lcd inverter.

Actually it looks like your laptop uses the LED screen instead of LCD so it will not have the LCD Inverter. You will have to purchase a new screen. I found the one below on ebay.

Newer monitor won't work with packard Bell R450

Wow, it's about time to dump the Packard Bell. Maybe the Video Card has gone bad in the Packard Bell and if you fix it your old monitor might work.

ACer Screen is pitch black, but system runs normally

Check if this will work on an external monitor, if it will, you can point the finger at the following:

  • Inverter failed: If you cannot see any image on the screen even a faint one, replace the inverter
  • Backlight gone: if you see a faint image on the screen, the screen needs replacing
  • Possible failure (unlikely) of the vga cable
If it will NOT work on an external monitor, the graphics chip on the motherboard has failed.

Test the laptop using an external monitor
If this works fine, then the issue is with the screen, or possibly the vga cable. I notice this is referred to as a compatible screen, was this obtained new, or is it 2nd hand. Although most 15.4 screens fit most 15.4 laptops, some do not display correctly, this might be your problem. If you know the screen to be good I would suspect the connection at the back of the screen

If this still shows issues with an external monitor, you have a problem with your graphics chip on the motherboard

hi have you tried FN+F3 as tis is the key sequence to send screen to external monitor. however failing this you might try to wipe the whole machine and start from scracth and upon failing this im sorry to say but its time for a new screen, and as i have the same laptop i can tell you the screens are roughly £70 but every now and again you find them on ebay cheap. however i would not advise putting a screen in this machine based on the cost and that the machine is not what ide call GOOD. the graphics card in these are extremely poor and clash with a lot of programes. also if you are ever planning on upping to windows 7 this machine doesnt handle it very well as i have found out, my advice if its the screen is throw it on ebay with a reserve of £50 as they mke good money for spares and repairs and look for a decent laptop as im sorry to say but our packard bell mz36 are pretty much a pice of SH#T.

Easynote will not go past packard bell screen

You may need BIOS update. Check your CMOS time at bios page.
If time is wrong, set it up and try again. If this is solved the problem, change the CMOS battery.

You could search the internet for Bios Master passwords. Other than that, just pull the ac power, main battery and cmos battery and let the system drain.

If its a Windows password, then respond back for more instructions.
