Inside the pc itself on motherboard you will see where it says clear password' there will be a white piece that clips into to pins . remove it stat computer up. once comp windows open shut back down and replace white pin clip. Restart computer al passwords are reset to factory settings. dell has no passwords at factory settings. So I am guessing that this should fix problem on any other

If you have an Win XP installation disk simply insert on the drive, turn off and turn on the computer and run the win XP installation.

If you only want to get rid the password go to there:

Bought a gateway tower at a garage sale

you cannot. you must restore it with the disks that came with it(if any)
if none exist, you will have to buy a version of Windows operating system and install it to the pc. then you will also have to download any hardware drivers, bios, and software updates for THIS computer model from the gateway website online and install them before this pc will work properly. Else you will have to take it to computer shop and ask them to restore it for you which will include the cost of Windows, and the labor to get it running with those drivers i mentioned. Depending how old the pc is, what Windows you need, this will cost at least more than buying a new one, unless you have a friend who will do it free or cheaply. Windows cost from $50-150, the shop may charge up to $150 or more to install everything in order to make it work. Mayber more if hourly. You can buy a used PC online much cheaper or even a new computer for $300-400. Decisions, decisions.

I bought a used computer from a sale and I was trying to Restore it back to factory settings but it asks for a password. The previous owner created the password and I have no idea how to get a hold of them...

The password is a security feature and as such is there to avoid theft etc.
If you prove you own it to a responsible computer repair shop, they should be able to clear the password for you.

Sir you have to reformat the hard drive and load the windows operating system windows xp,2000, vista or seven. then you need to load the application programs. You might be better off buying a working used computer. Also their are too many bad places to go to on the Internet.

Please go to the manufacturer website ... www.compaq.com/support find your model computer and get the drivers you require. If you have upgraded the sound card, make sure it is on the MS hardware compatibility list for your OS: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx:

HP owne's Compaq, in case you didn't know that ... you will likely be taken to the HP site ... but the link I provided will work for you.

I forgot the power on password

Is this a BIOS password? In other words, are you asked for a password immediately upon turning on the computer? If yes, then it depends on the make/model of the laptop whether you can fix this yourself. In any case, you would need to call Compaq tech support.

I turn on with the power button and it asks for my password but when i type it in it just keeps asking for it so i cant go any furthur please help

Now do you get to your windows login screen or not? if you do press Alt, Ctrl and Delete at the same time and type 'Administrator' as the account and leave the password blank since this is the default password and press enter. If it does not work, contact previous owners or whoever you bought it from to obtain administrator password. Once you get in, you can change your old password to a new one which will solve your problem. It sounds like someone has changed your password on you so contact anyone who would even be a suspect in using your computer and question them as to why you can't login.

Hope This Helps

Power on password

did you set the password from the bios settings? if so, reset your bios by opening your pc casing (be sure that its unplugged) locate the bios reset jumper (mostly found near the battery cell in the motherboard) take out the plastic jumper from pins 1 and 2 and set it to pins 2 and 3 and wait for about 10 seconds then put it back to its original settings ( 1 and 2 ). close your casing and start your pc

Do you mean register the computer? If you bought it from a garage sale, chances are it's old and you will not benefit from registering it.
