Whirlpool Calypso Agitator/nunater not working.... HELP!

This machine has been great... until now. We've had it about 7 years and today the wash plate is not doing its dance. It spins and does everything else... just no motion in the wash cycle. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Feel free to email us directly at RLFixAuto@aol.com

A portion of a tablecloth is caught under the washer plate. How do we remove it.

I am not a repair professional. I am just a 78 year old
man who has been making his own repairs for about
50 years. Therefore the washer ID doesn't mean
much to me. It's been about 55 years since I had
experience with front load washers. However I can
suggest you go to www.applianceaid.com where
they have very good trouble shooting and repair
information on front loaders. I think you'll find what
you need there. Good luck with it.

I have a sheet that is stuck in the bottom of my washer. how can i get it out?

I purchased the Kenmore version of this machine about 7 years ago, and have had nothing but problems. 2 pumps (I finally learned how to clean them out and replace myself) and many agitator problems.
The large, dome on top of the agitator has little slots on the edge about midway. Use a slotted screwdriver (not too long) and wiggle each slot in succession while pulling at the dome. This will reveal several bolts holding down the agitator plate. Use a socket wrench with an extension. Be careful to get all the bolts out before lifting the agitator plate (you may lose them). You cannot remove the plate from the machine in this state, but you can lift it up and free any stuck clothing.
I have heard that they make a kit now to prevent this.
Good luck.

How to take out garmets cout underneath the

The wash plate on a Calypso is called the "nunater". The following link explains step-by-step how to remove it:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r1065026-calypso_nunater_removal

It is common for clothing to get wrapped around the u-joint, or leveler assembly. Use care when removing any garments not to damage any if these components under the nunater.

Let me know if you have any questions. I hope this helps you.

Calypso top loader, clothes getting stuck under the gasket

I would recommend replacing the main (outer) wash plate. Sometimes the edges of the plate become worn with age and can catch on clothing. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r1065026-calypso_nunater_removal

You may not have to use all the steps mentioned, but it will give the advice necessary to complete any repairs you may require. The link also mentions where you may obtain parts. I hope you find this helpful. If you still experience problems, please post back and let me know.

Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959KL1 ruins clothes

I can assure you this IS a common problem. I can't tell you how many customers I have had in the past that complained about their Calypso's leaving the same marks on their clothing. The problem occurs because of the suction on the clothes as the washer extracts water from them during the final nunator cycle. The nunator is the wash plate that the clothes get caught in. The manufacturer's cure for this problem was to come up with a modified control board that reduces the final nunator time and minimizes the suction action on your clothing. The replacement control board part number is 8571359. I have ordered and installed this board on a few Calypso's. I'm surprised that nobody advised you of this in the past. If you call Whirpool back and they deny this, I got this information from them. It may be worth your while to contact them again to see if there is a recall on this and if they would cover the cost of the repairs.

CLOTHES GETTING STUCK UNDER WASH PLATE

I don't know of a "permanent" fix, but I do know that replacing the nunater (wash plate) may help. Especially, if the rubber around the edge is starting to crack or curl, creating areas where clothing can catch. This is a known problem with the Calypso. As I was instructed, the problem was attributed to an excessive nunator time at the end of the wash cycle. Such a vacuum was being generated that it was pulling clothing into the edges of the nunator, leaving rubber marks and/or clothes becoming lodged. The manufacturer modified the control board to reduce the nunator time to prevent this. I can provide you with a part number, but do not know if the manufacturer will cover the cost of replacment. If interested, let me know. Do you need advice on how to remove the nunator (wash plate)? Or, did my previous post explain this enough for you? Please post back if you require additional assistance.

Cloths under the agitator

There was a noted problem with the Calypso washing machine involving the control board. The machine had a tendency at the end of the wash cycle to pull such a vacuum to remove excess water from the clothes that it would pull clothes under the nunator (wash plate). This cycle consisted of a 30 second drain that often pulled such a vacuum that clothing would sometimes become stuck. The manufacturer came out with a replacement control board that took the 30 second nunator cycle and reduced it to (I believe) 10 seconds. This was supposed to minimize the possibility of clothing damage. The part number for the new control board was 8571359. There should have been a service flash out on this, but I'm not certain. You can try to get in touch with Sears at 1-800-252-1698 to inquire about this. I don't know if the manufacturer will cover the cost of replacement, but they SHOULD. This was a KNOWN problem, so they should be familiar with the circumstances. Let me know if you decide to pursue it and see what they may have to say. I hope this has been helpful to you.

Clothes getting sucked under agitator

I was able to find information on another web site with a Whirlpool Calypso repair manual: https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/2c1e295a88aaaae885256c5d004632a4/$FILE/8178010.pdf

Check out steps 5 and 6 on page 36:

6. Using two (2) flat bladed screwdrivers, 90°
apart, in the notches provided, separate the
dome from the outer wash plate. (Fig. 3-11)

7. Remove the six (6) 3/8” bolts securing the
outer wash plate to the universal joint.
(Fig. 3-12) Remove the outer wash plate
from the basket.

That gave me enough room to lift the outer wash plate and remove three napkins and a wash rag.

P.S. Take precautions to keep the bolts from dropping under the outer wash plate.

Have you checked the agitator? There may be sharp edges on the agitator blades. OR the towels may be getting stuck under the agitator and tub bottom. The agitator is supposed to suck the clothing down in the center and forcibly throw the clothing outwards against the tub. The cycle then repeats.
