Sound of water dripping on something hot

Tonight we started hearing water dripping at a fairly high rate from our fridge. I opened up the freezer side and began to hear the sound of water sizzling, like the drips were falling on something hot. We have been in this rented home for 6 months and not heard it make this sound. It lasted for about 5 minutes. I pulled out the bottom drawer of the freezer side and looked to the back to see a metal plate behind a white plastic grid. This seemed to be where the water was dripping to, but when I felt the plate it did not feel hot. Can "cold on colder" make that sound? Any idea what the sizzling sound might be? Thanks.

It sounds like you are refering to the defrost cycle. This would make the noise you hear. Try cleaning the condensor coils and the fan that is in the bottom where the compressor is. This may help. let me know. have a great day.

this IS normall. the freezer is just in defrost cycle. the heat elements are on and defrosting the evaporator. you are hearing the water hitting the elements and running to the drain. this is normall, does it every day, just the first time you happen to notice it. shane

Whirlpool Fridge makes a loud dripping sound all the time G56SHE

Erin,

The water you hear sounds like it's coming from the automatic defroster in the freezer compartment. It runs down a drain tube into the pan you describe under the fridge. The pan is heated and evaporates the water.

Just some possible explanations if you are hearing "lots" of water"

* You may be in a warmer, more humid climate
* The temperature and humidity in your dwelling is elevated
* The door gasket on the freezer may be leaking
* The freezer is too full
* The freezer door is not closing properly
* The freezer door is being left open for extended periods
* There is a problem with the defrost cycle

If you are hearing water running all the time, check the ice maker water line and fill valve (if you have an ice maker) - there could be a leak or other malfunction.

yes.you will have to replace the ice maker.if further used without replaceing the compressor will get damaged and you will completely loose cooling in your unit.

Hot coil?

Hello gaylekell,
Welcome to Fix ya

You said, you just opened your fridge a minute ago and it sounded like water or something is dripping on a hot coil at the bottom back of fridge.

It is in the auto defrost mode!
All frost free or self defrost refrigerators use this method of dispersing the water into the air as vapor.
As the water accumulates below the fridge is supposed to blow the water onto the hot coil or compressor and evaporate it away. That's why there are no more drip pans to empty!

If you do not notice any problem in the operation of your fridge
and it is not excessively loud, (Which I do not think it will be under a normal situation )
Your fridge is more than likely running normally and fine!
How old is the fridge and what's the model number?

Thank You for utilizing my advice, Huuum

Falling water hits something hot in freezer and causes sizzle sound

the sizzling noise is water hitting the defrost elememt and this is normal - shows the defrost system is working. if water comes on the floor of the freezer, this may be the drain for the defrost water is blocked. remove the freexer back panel and the drain is in the tray where the defrost water is caught. if it is blocked - usually with ice - clear it with hot water and make sure the water drains freely. takes some patience and maybe several attempts
