Sparks coming from FBT

I downloaded a manual and we have sparks coming from the FBT. Not even sure what FBT stands for. Can this be fixed? If so, can we do it and where to get the part, or do we need to take it to a repair shop. Don't want a huge repair bill - when a new TV is about the same.

I have a meter somewhere but haven't found it yet. We have been working on the house and things get out of place. The only thing we found was an outlet voltage tester. Could this repair get expensive? If so maybe we should just put the money into a new TV. Any thoughts?

If the sparks are coming from the flyback transformer then it needs to be replaced. You would need to be able to use a meter to determine if more damage has been done or not. Let me know If you can use a meter and i will give you some stuff to check. If you take this to a repair shop you can bet on $400-$600 for repair.

My tv will not come on and sparks when i plug it in

If it sparks when plugged in that means the main fuse in the tv is not blown. If there was sorting wrong with the tv and you saw sparks the fuse should blow. If the fuse blew you will not see sparks anymore and the set will not come on. But if the fuse did not blow one of the following can be the cause.

1. A short in the line cord, check you plug and wire to make sure there are no breaks in the wire.
2. Sparking can be from a bad outlet, a plug that is not making good connection can cause sparking, try plugging in to another outlet if it still sparks check the prongs and make sure they are not blackened.

Hitachi 51F500

FBT for that unit is about 60-80 bucks. You can easily check the hot for continuity across Base, Collector and Emitter. If you have continuity between C&E and B&E chances are the HOT will need to be replaced...
I'll need your email to Pando the service manual - Fixya does not allow for large downloads like manuals...

Mitsubishi WS-65857 RPTV Popping/Sparking/Crackling Noise, Then No Picture

When they list two flybacks like that it's usually for different models,
>>do you think I might have caused more damage to other parts by continuing to turn it on after the initial symptoms? Those loud pops did not sound good.
more than likely not but who knows.

crackling nose like that is a good indicator of flyback or crt being shorted.
some times you can look on the neck towards the end of the tube and see inside the tube arcing, but then again your picture should be all messed up if that was the case.

It turns on, and then after 4 seconds it sparks and turns off.

Where does the spark come from? Can you see it from behind the set when the power button is pressed? It could be solder related or a cracked bad flyback. Try to notice wheeit sparks from then let me know.

Was there actually power when the Television was sparking? I would suggest replacing the power module and having someone test the voltage coming out of the plug it was plugged into did it trip the breaker?
