How to Access Color Wheel on Toshiba 46HM95

How do I open up this set to access the color wheel. Some folks said they could clean the wheel through the lamp housing but there's glass over the small port into the color wheel. I don't understand how I can vacuum the wheel when I can't get to it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Well, I keep hearing about how folks opened up the light bulb housing and vacuumed the color wheel--on this model. I was just wondering how they did this.

    Specifically this post by 24fanny:

"Well folks I had some issues with the tv (46hm95) as well. Oranges and reds seemed to blur and become almost "blocky" or looked like large pixels. Facials seemed way off especially if someone had blotchy skin. I took out my bulb and shone a light into the color wheel assembly. Much to my dismay I saw that the color wheel was coated with a thick layer of caked on dust. I took the tv all apart (this was a project) and cleaned the color wheel with a qtip and windex. I aslo cleaned the projection lens which had accumulated dust. I got it back together and the tv is like new. I was missing out on so much color and detail, as the dust built up gradually over time I never noticed how bad it had gotten. I had also had some cloudy spots on the screen before this and it remedied that as well. I would highly recommend doing this to get the performance out of the tv, but if you are not mechanically inclined be very careful."

I bought a used 46hm95 but it had a greenish "band" that streched from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. It was only noticeable on a white or light colored background, which is why I overlooked it when I tested out the TV.

I took out the bulb and shined a flashlight into the color wheel. I could see a fingerprint smudge on it. I took off the lower rear plastic panel. the rear is split into two section (the light engine is on the right. You'll have to unscrew a metal guard (three scerws), then disconnect the wires coming from the left section, and then unscrew the plastic guard that protects the lens. Then unscrew the light engine (two screws) and slide it out carefully (you don't have to take it completely out, just far enough to reach the screws to the color wheel covers). There are two covers protecting the color wheel, one plastic and one metal. Unscrew the plastic cover first than the four screws to the metal cover. I left the color wheel in place while I cleaned it with a microfiber cloth. I did pull the glass square in front of the color wheel and wiped that down too.

I put everything back together, and now the picture is perfect.

Things to remember are:
*Keep track of the screws and where they belong, as you remove them so you'll remember where they go when it's time to put things back together.
*Mark the wire connectors from any wire you disconnect in case you forget where they go.
*Be gentle with the color wheel and the glass square because they are fragile.

Hope this helps.

To Carlos MDO, I was ready to buy a new TV when I find your instructions. I was able to clean up the color wheel and my TV is working as new right now. Thank you for detailed instructions.

My color wheel hums like a noisy fan. I can see and feel this with the TV gutted as you described above. Does anyone supply just the color wheel motor as a service part not attached to the color engine?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

You have to remove the light engine to get at the color wheel. It is not that hard to do if you have some electronics background I would suggest you download the services manual it cost about 10 bucks..I have not been able to find a replacement for mine if anyone finds one please let me know. Thanks

You can order the motor from TSM. It looks like you have to use the wheel it self. I will find out as soon as mine arrives.

Reports indicate the color wheel is sealed in the light engine and MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE AS A SEPARATE PART.

You can contact either Andrews Electronics (LA and largest OEM parts dealer in USA---some of these sets do not sell it as a part--have to buy the entire light engine which is more than the set is worth as a used set.

Google the model number with color wheel after it and you will see what I am talking about.

If this told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

Hi,If it seems you are experimenting a color wheel problem. The color wheel is a rotating disc that has a gamma of colors it spins at high rpms. The light of the lamp goes through it to create the colors on your tv.When it starts to go bad you will get color distortion ,black and white picture and sometimes you will hear humming noises.I found it with complete light engine assembly here: http://www.discount-merchant.com/TOSHIBA-2973026206-p/1160068.htm?Click=48173

Bad color wheel...

You won't be able to replace just the motor. And, its true that Toshiba has not seen fit to offer this part independently from the light engine assy. Try checking with PTS in Indiana. They may be able to fix your old wheel or sell you a rebuilt one.

More than likely, as with almost EVERY 46HM95, it's your light engine or color wheel (same thing) starting to go out. The piece alone will run between $500 and $750.. Install prices depend on where ya go. And don't let the Toshiba rep lie to ya. That person might not have known the problem, but Toshiba as a whole has heard about this problem and known about it. If you've searched the internet for the same problem, you'll see that almost everyone that has bought this TV gets the same response from Toshiba "Never heard of it" or "it's out of warranty, tough luck" I'm surprised there hasn't been a class action lawsuit yet.
