Question about Garmin GPSMAP 76 GPS Receiver

Unit shut down

Occassionally my Garmin GPSmap 76 will suddenly shut down within minutes of my turning it on. The screen goes blank except for a thin verticle line. None of the keys work, not even the on/off key. I have found that if I remove a battery, then reinsert it, then turn on the unit in the normal manner again that it will come on. Often it will soon shut down again with the same blank screen and verticle line. However, sometimes it will work fine for many uses. I have checked the battery power when the unit is still working and it is strong. If not, I put in fresh batteries, but the strengh of the batteries does not seem to be the affecting factor.

I have had exactly the same experience and I'm trying to find a solution.

  • Anonymous Sep 30, 2008

    Same problem here.

No luck finding a solution yet.

Could it be related to the battery type?

Its normal for position to shift but not that much. Try again and look at the sat status screen to see how many satelites you pick up and how strong signal is.

It's most likely that software failure caused GPS to chew up the batteries. The GPS uses a lot energy while acquiring.

If your software is less than v4.00 then download this update:

    GPSMAP 76 Ver. 4.00 as of Nov 29, 2006

If that doesn't work it may be necessary to do a master reset.

I have been researching this same problem for my brother, After replacing the battery, it accesses the satellites, and then when on the mapping page, it quickly reverts to the vertical line. I will try updating the software, and failing a resolution, I will try a reset.

This is Nstar who first presented this verticle line problem. The day after posting the issue here I called Garmin. A very helpful curteous live woman knew immediately what the problem was. I post it here to help those who responded. Actually several of you were right on track. The problem is caused by a software issue which in the GPS map 76 units (the black and white screen one) and not in the later color screen map 76s. She said that it is indeed related to WAAS software and that if this is disabled it will work (per Car34-P2P). However, the far better solution is to download to the GPS unit the updated version 4.00 software (per hydetech) from the Garmin web site. Thanks to all those who offered help. -Nstar

I have run into the same problem and it may be related to the WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) feature. Try disabling this feature (under MAIN MENU / Setup). I used this receiver overseas (Asia and Europe) last year for 35 days straight with no problems. During this time WAAS was disabled as none of these satellites are visible overseas. The problem occurred intermittently prior to the overseas trip, and has reoccurred after returning. I was running into the same problem this past weekend and noticed the screen blanking out (with the vertical line) shortly after differential corrections were applied to the GPS signals. I disabled the WAAS and let the receiver run for over an hour. The problem did not return. Hope this helps.

My problem exactly. Unit would start up, acquire satellites, then the screen would go blank with a single vertical line. Unit would not respond to buttons or even turn off. Unit works fine after I did the reset:

- w/unit OFF, press and hold QUIT+DOWN+MENU
- press and release the power button, release DOWN, keep holding QUIT+MENU for 5 seconds.
- unit prompts something like: "erase all data;" choose yes.
- you will lose waypoints, etc.

Go to the Garmin support area for details.

Garmin e-trex Vista - blank screen

I would suggest that you contact Garmin for a replacement if you still have it under warranty. If your computer can still detect the Garmin when plugged in you might still be able to update the firmware but as you said it does not turn on then that would be a remote possiblity so it would be best to have it replaced if it is under warranty

Screen goes blank except for a verticle streak

I had the same problem (blank screen, vertical line). After speaking with Garmin, I was told to make sure I was using the latest software version, and to turn off the WAAS function. Disable it for now, because the WAAS signal, coming from the satellite, has changed, and Garmin has not yet published a remedy to correct this problem. A fix should be out in a software update, sometime in the future, hopefully. I also did the software update, to the latest version 4.0. The unit performs perfectly now, however, the accuracy is not quite as good, due to the lack of WAAS. Good Luck!!

Blank Screen on Garmin E-Trex Vista

The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.

Garmin gpsmap 162 turns on, works for about two minutes, then a thin black vertical line comes across screen and screen goes blank with the line remaining. I have to unplug and start over. Same things...

Possible Solution found on google....

My old Garmin 162 chartplotter was mounted on the binnacle guard and served me
well for many years. Lately, it started getting very slow to refresh screens.
At times, it would shut down with only a black vertical line on the screen. On
our last cruise, the screen froze at a very critical moment. Too old to
repair, I bought a new Garmin 440, which I am very disappointed with, but
that's another story.
I read an article in the GoodOldBoat newsletter about the Department of Defense
making changes to the WAAS satellites that have caused problems in Garmin 72
and 76. Garmin's tech support recommended to turn the WAAS function off on
affected units. So I got out my old 162 and turned the WAAS off and it works
fine. To make sure it wasn't a fluke, I turned it off and on several times,
and it always slowed down with WAAS turned on. With it turned off, the
position error or accuracy, increases 1-2ft, not a big deal. I hooked the unit
up on my truck and drove around. Not a problem. Further reading indicates
that other brands of GPS are also having problems with the new WAAS
transmissions.
So if you are having problems with your GPS and it is new enough to have WAAS,
try to turn it off

MAP 76 locks up in normal mode after acquiring and starting to track, three to four minutes. Screen goes blank except for vertical stripe, no keys work. Have to pull batteries to turn off. Unit works...

Disable it for now, because the WAAS signal, coming from the satellite, has changed, and Garmin has not yet published a remedy to correct this problem. What you said does make sense. When you have your unit in simulator mode, the GPS receiver is turned off, so it is not receiving signals from the satellites. The strange signal from the WAAS satellite must be what has been messing things up. Good Luck!

Garmin GPSmap 76 not acquiring satellites

You need to do an auto locate. This also corrects your time issues (wrong date and/or time will be corrected. To do an auto locate do the following.
  1. Start with the unit turned off.
  2. If you have a GPSMAP 76, GPSMAP 76C, or GPSMAP 76S, hold down the Page button. If you have a GPSMAP 76CSx or GPSMAP 76Cx, hold down the Zoom Out button.
  3. While holding down the first button (Page or Zoom Out), press and hold the Power button.
  4. Continue to hold the two buttons until the Satellite page displays. You can then then let go of the buttons.
  5. Finally, let the unit sit outside with a clear view of the sky. Allow about 20-40 minutes for the unit to acquire satellites.
