Only works when adapter's plugged in.

I thought it was just a flat battery because it wouldn't turn on, so I plugged in the charger...then it worked when I turned it on...but even after charging for most the night, it would still only work when plugged in....

Please help!!!

Does the battery indicator on the bottom left hand corner of the screen flash when you charge it ?
If not it sounds like the batteries are over discarged.
Hold in the function button on the side as yoe plug the charger in.

Try plugging and unplugging the charger/ac adapter several times to see if the switch that is built into the jack might be stuck from dirt or corrosion.sometimes you can take a toothpick and get them unstuck too.

  • Hi, I can help.

  • It is very possible that the corrosion could be a little worse than initially thought. Look for unnoticed corrosion and clean the contacts real real well with a pencil eraser.

  • Under the third battery is a switch marked (Charge) OFF/ON. When using the power supplies to power the scanner the switch should be off (pushed to the left). When using batteries the switch should be turned to on (pushed to the right)

  • The internal charger is meant to charge Ni-Cad batteries not Alkaline batteries. If you have Alkaline batteries in the unit then you should never have that switch to on with the power cord plugged in or a charge will be attempted on the Alkaline batteries and they will explode/leak.

  • The problem will be that switch, unnoticed corrosion or the batteries you are using are not good.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Batteries do not charge when plugged into mains

Check the batteries and the connections inside the scanner for corrosion. If necessary, clean both with a dry cloth, fine wire brush, or steel wool. Check the batteries for continuity and voltage. If they are shorted, "dead," or more than a year old you should replace them. Also check the output of your charger. It's rare for a charger to go out, but it does happen.

It just doesnt turn on what do i do

If the scanner is still under warranty you can take it any Radio Shack store for a no-charge fix. Before you do that though, check the battery pack and the charger with a meter if possible, and try powering up with a spare battery pack if you have one. Chargers rarely fail, but the batteries may need to be replaced, especially if they're more than a year old.

Need adapter/charger

Radio Shack no longer markets a charger/adapter made specifically for the PRO-82, but the 6-volt Enercell AC adapter with a size C Adaptaplug will work with your scanner. Radio Shack total retail for the pair is $30, and you can probably find them on line for even less. You might even luck out and find a compatible 6v wall wart on eBay.

Not getting any power

Ok, are the batteries fresh? Did you make sure they are installed correctly? Have you tried an AC adapter plugged into the side of the unit? This bypasses the battery compartment and may work, indicating the problem area is within the battery compartment and or its wiring. I'd take it to radio shack and see if they will give a quick opinion, mabye letting you try a charger before you buy. Also, if nothing works, Radio Shack repairs Their scanners, often for a very reasonable price. been there, done that. Bst of luck!

Scanner turns it self off

Try doing a reset on the scanner, and make sure your battery is good. For the one that dropped it, remove the battery, remove and reinstall the APCO card, bci25d, and then try powering it with the wall adapter, leave the battery out. If it turns on and stays on you might just have a bad battery, they fail and there is plenty of reports online of battery failure causing weird problems.

For the next post regarding your problems to get it to stay on and the APCO card. Remove the card completely, reset the scanner, and then reinstall the card. Make sure its off and the battery and wall adapter are disconnected when removing and replacing the card for safety. After replacing the card leave the battery out and plug in the wall adapter and try turning it on, again eliminating the battery as the possible problem. If it won't turn on you have a bad wall adapter, if it turns on then off yet you could still have a bad wall adapter, get a voltmeter and check it. If it now turns on and stays on you have a bad battery, replace it. You mentioned there is no charge to the battery, how did you check that, is it acting like the battery is not charging? That can also just be symptoms of a bad battery.

The adapter for the 250D is the AD600U, 12v 500ma.

Pro 97 Handheld - Adapter Issue

I have the same problem with my pro-79 scanner. The adapter from my Uniden cordless phone works on my scanner, but then the phone won''t work.
I have rechargeable batteries but they don't stay charged very long in the scanner. I know this didn't solve your problem but thought I would let you know about the cordless phone adapter.

Radio Scanner not working

Writer1, if your talking about the voltage adapter that plugs into the wall socket to the scanner, then probably what happened was the socket is soldered to the circuit board, and it probably got knocked loose. Possibly tore some solder traces loose, wouldn't know without looking at it. Take a pencil or pen and gently push on the center pin of the adapter and see if it moves around. It should not move. Any good electronic repair shop should be able to repair it. The only problem might be if the socket itself is cracked and broken. Their usually made of plastic, with the metal contacts inside. I know this is probably not the answer you were looking for, but it's the best I can do from long distance. Good luck with it and let us know how it comes out,,, Mechanic

Low battery display

My first guess would be to take a volt meter, and check the power pack to see if it's putting out the correct DC voltage(or any voltage). Those things are super cheap!
Then check the plug in on the scanner to make sure your getting a good connection(might have a broken connection to the circuit board). If those are 2 year old rechargeable batteries, they might be getting close to laying down and dying. Hope this helps,, Mechanic
