Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television

Left top and right top of screen curled, bottom middle of screen has a hump to it

One day i turned my tv on and the colors were out of whack so i manually adjusted the convergence and the colors are fine however when watching a program like a baseball game the score that appears on the top of the screen is curled at each end and also any words that may be at the bottom middle of screen are raised up like a hump. Any ideas i mean tv is watchable however looks weird watching sometimes.

Thanks Tim for the info. yes i can solder and use a meter how delicate is this procedure and how do i not shock myself in the process. I do have some bench assembly experience but has been awhile though.

Yes you need to repair the convergence circuit. If you know how to solder and use a meter this can be fixed easily by yourself. If you call a repairman to do it, it will run you $300-$500 depending on your area. Let me know if you can use a meter and solder and we can move forward with repairing you set.

You dont have to worry to much about shocking yourself in this one as long as its unpluged and you stay away from the power supply. In order to fix this one you will need to replace both STK392-110's and any open resistors there by them. IF you have trouble finding the burnt resistors (if there are any) you can post a picture of the circuit boards and i will show you where they are.

There are a few more things that can cause this problem. You need to check the resistors that are infront of the stk's If you are in the back of the set looking in, the resistors im talking about are to left and in front of the stk's kinda in the corner of the circuit board. If you post a picture of the board I will circle what i need you to check.

    Thank

    Tim

I have a sony kp-41t65 tv acting like computer screen out of whac

Projection sets have two very common problems outlined below.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. The TV can also shut down when the convergence starts to fail.

Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith, RCA and others.

You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from TV Repair Kits using the link at the end of this article.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped or bowed
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Arc or hump on bottom left of tv and color is faded bad.

Your convergence Ic's have gone bad. Most likely a few small resistors with them. It's really not a job you should try and takle if you haven't done it before. Not a major deal for a svc co.
