Hello 4fiddy,

If you look at the board you will see what I am talking about. A correct solder connection will look shiny a cold solder connection will be dull and or contain cracks in it. As willtab said this may be a loose connection in one of the ribbon cables so check that too. What you are trying to find is a connection that is loose be it connectorized or soldered. Just remember to work with the test unplugged and only restore power after you have finished soldering and finding loose connections.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Is your tv having problems. why do you need to resolder? this set can have bad connections on flyback. this is the big black thing with the red wire coming out. there is been reports of bad connections. on the flat ribbion cable connectors. i have had no problems with these in the shop. the only othe place that ever gave me trouble was the horizontal output tansistor. WARNING. this set can and does hold voltages 340 even with the set unpluged so be careful

This is typical with many sets when it goes old as there is a high possibility that the components over a period of heating and cooling , tend to bring on a problem of dry soldering. So my advice is to check the set for some loose joints that have played on to give you these erratic shut downs.

Remove main plug, the covers - with caution of high voltage, check for dry joints, use a good soldering iron to solder all suspected points. Please remove the SMPS and check as it can have poor solder joints. Look for bloated capacitor in the circuit. If seen replace and check.

Just removing and re-inserting a circuit board can make it look like you have temporarily fixed something as it disturbs soldered joints but as the board heats up, the fractured joints open back up.

Some factured solder joints cannot be seen unless viewed by at least 5x magnification so you may have to re-solder other connections that you may have temporarily disturbed but missed. You need to make sure you only use lead free solder on this model of TV as mixing Tin/Lead (called 60/40 or 63/37) and lead free causes brittle solder joints that are prone to cracking.

The best way to re-solder a joint is to remove all old solder to ensure you do not have compatability problems. I recommend removing and resoldering at least 3 times if you are soldering with a different solder.

If the fault is not down to solder joints, heating the components when you re-soldered them could have made them work again for a short time, this is especially true with capacitors.

One last thought is that most TV's have a seperate inverter board which could be suffering the same problems. You do not mention if the TV sounds like it is working and just has a blank screen (inverter fault) or if the TV is not working at all (psu fault).

Not have picture

I need to assume you are a DIY and have some electrical experience. If you aren't comfortable taking apart on of these TV's then you should call an expert. If you are comfortable, then read on.

It has been my experience with older rear projectors that the solder joints on the main board become cracked over time. If you have a set that shuts down after warming up, you might be able to check the board for bad joints.

Always be careful when working on these old beasts. I would always unplug them and let them sit over night to discharge a bit before opening them up. The picture tubes still hold a charge so be careful.

Cold solder joints or cracked ones can be seen with really good lighting. Look for a half moon shape on the solder joint, epically on the large transistors near the heat sinks. Be careful not to cause solder bridges when you are touching up the solder joints.

Hope this helps.

My screen has no red color. I assume the red color gun has gone bad. Is this it? How expensive to fix? Is there a do it yourself cheap fix?

Its most likely a problem with the Red CRT drive board. If the tube were to fail you would have either a red screen with lines, or the set would shut down. Often its as simple as a bad solder joint on the CRT socket on the Drive Board. I would check the board very carefully for signs of bad solder such as dull ( Indicating Cold solder ) or actual cracks in the solder. If all solder looks good I would try replaceing the Drive board.
