Can't enable manual white balance and other options on nikon d40?
I just got my Nikon D40 and I can't seem to figure out how to enable the manual white balance and optimize image things under the Shooting Menu. I read the manual and I've tried changing CSM/Setup menu and Auto Shooting Info but I still can't get it to work - it just says "This option is not available with current settings". Thank you

Press the Info button on the back. Navigate to the WB entry and press OK. Choose the desired WB and press OK.
One of the options is PRE, where the camera can measure the light and set the WB appropriately. Place a neutral gray or white object under the lighting you'll be using. Select White Balance>White Balance Preset, highlight Measure, and press Right on the multiselector. Highlight Yes and press Right. Frame the reference object so it fills the viewfinder and press the shutter release button. If all goes well the camera responds with "Data acquired.
It's actually easier to do than to describe (or read about). Get the manual out, try it a couple of times, and it'll quickly become second nature.
You CAN!!! shoot in b/w with a d40, the only thing is you can't shoot in auto mode it has to be manual , aperture priority, or shutter prioirity. Go into menu - shooting mode - optimize image. you'll find it in there.
