I think that the disc does not have sata drivers and therefore it will not detect your hard drive, check if your HDD is connected via IDE or sata and let me know mate...

Installing Ubuntu Server on Dell Dimension 2400?

Step 1:
The Ubuntu Linux operating system is available either with or without a desktop environment. The version with the desktop environment is meant for personal use and includes word processing, email and graphic editing software. The version without the desktop environment is called "Ubuntu Server." The server version does not come with any graphical software or productivity software. There are three different desktop environments available for the Ubuntu operating system. The default is the Gnome desktop. The other two are the KDE and the XFCE desktop environments.

Log into the server. Type the command "sudo apt-get update" to update the list of software packages available. Type the command "sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" to install the Gnome desktop. Type the command "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" to install the XFCE desktop. Type the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" to install the KDE desktop. Type the command "sudo reboot" to reboot the server. Ubuntu Linux Tutorials,Howtos,Tips & News http://www.ubuntugeek.com/install-gui-in-ubuntu-server.html

When trying to turn on keep getting message to insert boot disk. it says no bootable device. When I bought the laptop did not come with any disk

It is asking for a boot disk because there is currently no disk available to boot from. This doesn't necessarily need to be a disk that came with the laptop, but you will need to install an operating system such as Windows, Mac OS, or Linux. For a free operating system, I recommend Ubuntu. http://www.ubuntu.com/

Bro you've better check first the hardware system requirements for that operating system before you proceed to installations. Ubuntu hardware system requirements. *CPU 700 MHz or 1GHz of processor *Hard Disk 3GB to 3.5GB of available disk space should be needed. *Memory 256MB or 1GB of RAM *Video Card at least 125MB for VGA graphics interface

Gurb hangs after installing ubuntu on raid 0. I left a 500 Mb /Boot (marked as bootable), 1,7 Gb swap on each disk and /root and /home partitions on raid 0 disks each. Installation gave me no problems but...

Hi,
I too upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to Ubuntu 9.10 using wubi, the Windows ubuntu installer. Everything was fine, and I even admired the beautiful desktop, added KDE. I was very impressed until came the time to reboot. Grub hung. I entered the console and tried to repair: To no avail.
I reinstalled Ubuntu/Gnome without installing KDE. All went fine until the time to reboot. It hung again. After several trials, I decided to go back to Ubuntu 9.04.

From what I could gather on the Internet, it has to do with the new type of file system ext4. If only I had the choice to use it or not.

Since I was using wubi and was not offered the choice to install the ext4 file system, I do not know whether that choice is offered on a full scale installation without wubi. You might try to find out if you can customize the installation process and not select the ext4 file system, if possible.

One remark concerning the amount of swap space you are setting aside. In my opinion that's too much: I have a 2GB RAM, about 300MB swap space, and each time I monitor swap usage I find it very low to nil.

Concerning Ubuntu 9.10, I will wait until the bug(?) is fixed before upgrading. Good luck to you

I hope it helps
Thank you for using FixYa.

Installing ubuntu on Raid 0

Ok I have Duo booted ubuntu a couple of times now. When you were partitioning did you use the automatic or he manual? Since you have two hard disks, I will assume you use a desktop and you know how to take it apart. So, if you did automatics the bestt I can tell you is to swith your hard drives around physically and if that fails try switching g the boot menu order. If you used manual partitioning then when you were creating the ext3 partition you did not type / in the text box labeled Moint Point (that's the best I can help you) I hope this has fixed your problem. GO UBUNTU

Missing floppy disk in 64bit ubuntu 8.10

I solved the problem now, so I hope it works for you. In the /etc/modules file, I added "floppy" top the list. I think the developers just removed the module loading for floppies because so few people need them now. This change should get the floppy module to load at boot. Note that you can also use the modprobe command to accomplish the same thing, but if you want it to load automatically upon booting, modify the /etc/modules file.

I've tried to install ubuntu+xubuntu on i686 duron 900? 256ram-

Not exactly sure what you are saying... but you DO have a Duron 700? That is 32-bit. No x64 for you!

If that is not what you're saying. You are saying that you received an Xubuntu alternate distro from Ubuntu? Ubuntu comes in prepackaged distributions for i686 (i386, i486)-32bit and x64-64bit.

You can download the Xubuntu for free at
http://www.xubuntu.org/get

Select the Hardy Heron i686 version. When you install, the installer "should" select the best kernel for your system.
