Try to disconnect the power cable from the back of the unit and reconnect it after few secs. The alingment will start itself. Complete the alingment once.

follow the steps below to resolve
select country (select US you can the follow the steps below
exactly as given to reach the resolution)
select See support and troubleshooting information
enter your product name (in your case HP Officejet J5780) and click on >>
then select Solve a problem
select Slow or no response from printer
select Print Jobs are Stuck in the Print Queue and Will Not Print with a USB Connected Printer in Windows Vista on this page you will find also the link for XP solution. Have you tried cleaning the document feeders Scan Glass? (small glass under doc feeder ~ 1" by 9") Most times there is dirt spot on this glass, causing a shadow on scans and copies.
Try copying from the large glass by lifting doc feeder / platen cover and manually placing original. If no line copying or scanning manually from large glass, then small scan glass is deffenitely the culprit. Hope this helps.
