Question about Sony STR-DE525

Sony STR-DE525 Protector mode

Howdy, I have a Sony STR-DE525 that faults to protector mode when turned on. I have located a2 blown output transistors and a burnt resistor (R527). The resitor is too discolored to get a code but reads 7.1K with a meter. Can anyone confirm this is the correct value? I would also appreciate any tips as to other components to check before ordering replacement parts. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Gary

Howdy, thanks for the link to the print. I have the value of the resistor now. I have checked the two lg caps and all output transistors. Could anyone point me to any other components to check before ordering parts.

I was trained as an electronic but have not worked in the field for many years. I have all of the necessary equipment and skills. I am just looking for someone with experience repairing this problem with the Sony STR-DE525 as it seems to be a frequent repair.

    Thanks, Gary

I have two blown transistors and one burnt resistor (Q506, Q507, R527) . I do not see any other components bad that are in the vicinity of these parts. Amp board is $116.00 + shipping, transistors are 4.25 each. I would rather order just what is needed and save $100.00 (if possible).

    Thanks, Gary

To repair an Amp or receiver is like step by step job for amature. Order new parts, replaced them and check result.

    How about rating solution?

Why does it say protector

It says 'PROTECT' It has sensed a fault with either the speaker wires shorted or an internal failure. Remove all speaker wires and try again. If it still says protect, then the problem is internal. Service shop repair.

try resoldering all open circuits then on power supply section check the electrolytic. capacitors. which are 80 volts, 10000microfarads also check regulators which 5&12volts (la7805&la7812) and I suppose things will workout

Sony str-DE435 Flash Protector

this is not a reset problem, you have a defective audio output, is either the outputs transistors or the drivers IC's ( integrated circuit) and sometimes if you are lucky is just loose connections on the drivers IC;s.
good luck

Flashing protector

This usually means an output transistor is shorted and the amp is protecting itself. There are usually 2 8 amp fuses GMA type (glass tube) that are located near the large transformer on the main board that also get blown. You can try the fuses and see if it fixes it (10% of the time it will). If they blow again, it will be one or more output transistors are shorted, and the unit will need professional repair.

check/replace your speaker wires. If a wire came loose, it will go into "protect" mode and shut down, to protect from a short circuit.

When power on it only shows protector and it doesn't work

The output transistors are probably defective. These are MN and MP transistors available from Sony and run about $12 each. There may be other components in the output stage that need to be replaced as well. Expect about $25-$40 in parts plus the local labor rate.

Show all time PROTECTER.

Got this from another link it may help, I haven't tried it....

The protector indication is always a sign of power problems. The most common of which is the loss of the output transistors in one or all of the audio output amplifiers. These devices go whenever they are overdriven, get too hot or have accidental shorts placed across the speaker terminals.

They are easy to replace if you have soldering skills and know how to identify them and ask the counter person at the local electronic parts store how to match for a replacement.

The equivelant replacement must be the same gender (npn or pnp), same physical package so it will mount on the heat sink, with higher voltage ratings than the original and current. If you can get the SOA or Safe Operating Area spec from the originals, the replacements should be a little higher if possible; that way they won't go again so soon.

I donot have the schematic or service manual for this unit, but you can calculate all the output parameters for the device by knowing the power output ratings of the amplifier into an 8 ohm load. P=E times I or V squared/Rload.

Let me know if I can guide you along the way.
