To determine if the keyboard controller is faulty or the keyboard is faulty, connect an USB keyboard to your laptop. If all the keys work on the USB keyboard then the laptop keyboard is faulty and it needs to be replaced.
A replacement keyboard maybe available from this WEB site.

Cannot work out how to use the @ symbol as just bought this for my daughter

If the netbook has been set up with the wrong keyboard settings from new, it may have a different language configuration.

Try pressing Shift and the number 2 instead of Shift and ' - this is the most common difference between UK and USA keyboard layouts.

If this works, then it is possible to reconfigure. What operating system is installed? (WIndows 7, or Linux, for example).

Good luck.

Keyboard types wrong characters

Hi,

You may have a wrong default keyboard layout.
To resolve this please do the following:
Assuming you are using Windows 7, click Start->Control Panel, and then go to the "Clock, language and region" icon, and click on the "Change keyboards or other input methods" link.
When the window opens, click the "Change keyboards" button.
When the window opens, check the default input language. Assuming you are in the U.S. If it doesn't say "English (United States) - US" then you need to change that by highlighting the wrong language, and clicking on the "Remove" button.
As a last step, restart the computer to make sure the settings are applied.

NETBOOK KEYBOARD NOT WORKING

Hi,
You better check first if it is the keyboard on your netbook is the problem.
Below is the steps that you can use:

You need to use external keyboard ( typical keyboard usually use for desktop PC ). plug the external keyboard to the port where you can plug the cord of the external keyboard cord going to your netbook

Then, if the external keyboard will work the best thing to do is to bring your netbook to the support center near in your area to check if the keyboard of the netbook if its still working properly and to find out if you really need to purchase a replacement for the keyboard of your netbook

If the external keyboard will not work you also need to go bring your netbook to the support center to check the parts that is connected in your netbook.
