Just because you are not using it does not mean that your computer is not using it ...press ctrl al and del simultaneously to get the popup task manager..then check the application tab.. if you see any processes running that originate from that external drive..select them and then select end task. then try ejecting your hard drive.. Let me know if that works for you...or if not.. I have a few other ideas that you can try... Good luck

My external hd (fantom titanium) doesn't regularly open on my mac suddenly

fouad,

Inside the case of that Fantom is a regular harddrive.

Also inside that outer case is a small circuit board, that either the harddrive plugs directly into it; or there is an interface block the harddrive plugs into, and there are wires from it, that connect to the small circuit board.

(The USB cable is connected to the small circuit board)

It is this small circuit board that usually goes bad.

My suggestion is to remove the harddrive inside, purchase an economical external enclosure, and install the harddrive in it.
Have your harddrive back, and be able to use it as an external harddrive again also.

The Harddrive Inside:
Harddrives are measured by their Width.
A laptop harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. (2-1/2 inches)
A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches.

The Fantom Titanium II 500GB's harddrive inside, is 3.5 inches,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822204034

Details > Physical Spec > Form Factor > 3.5

What I can't tell you is whether it is an IDE (PATA) harddrive, or a SATA harddrive.
However this external enclosure for 3.5 inch harddrives, is for both IDE, (PATA), and SATA harddrives,

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817388014R

[ You can also look at the label on the harddrive, and look up it's model number online, to see if it is IDE or SATA. Just type the model number in your search bar ]

Just want to include information on IDE (PATA), and SATA, in case you are interested,

IDE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_ATA

SATA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

1. if you don't eject the eternal drive properly it could cause the controller board inside the case to fail.
.2. USB drives are to be eject by the windows feature never disconnect while drive is in the port without using the ejection feature.
3. check the drive in another port to see if it can be seen in the computer list.
if not you may a defective usb controller in the case. the drive can be remove and installed into a new case. The drive may not have been damaged.
4. A new case can be purchased at the local computer store.

Maxtor 3200

Seagate troubleshooting Error Code 10, states that drive has failed. (Seagate bought out Maxtor)

Before you resign yourself to everything is lost on this harddrive, how about trying one more thing?

How about putting the harddrive inside in a new external enclosure, and see if it works? I suggest that perhaps the external enclosure it's in, is bad.
The harddrive inside is a 3.5 inch harddrive. Same width as used by a desktop computer. It is a Sata harddrive.

Here's an example of a 3.5 inch Sata, external enclosure,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3901268&CatId=2780
Just pop the external enclosure open that holds it now, take it out, and install it into an external enclosure like the example above. Plug in the USB cable.

Don't know if this applies to your particular Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, but when I went to search for the type of harddrive it uses just now, I ran into thsi, and thought I would pass it along. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/personal_storage/ps3200-sw)

Unplugged My Book USB port without ejecting 1st - all data lost!

I wish I had the words of comfort that you will need with this tale of woe I must tell you.

You see, its a matter of organization.

Though your data is SOMEWHERE on the disk, without proper ejection, the disk cannot find them as they had been assigned data space.

It is very much like the requirement that a computer be properly shut down or face similar problems with its internal disks becoming corrupted.

Your files were not actually cleared, they were corrupted, but perhaps the volume can be repaired.

Go into your applications folder, (as you should have done while installing the disk in the first place) and find a folder entitled "Utilities" and within that folder and icon entitled "Disk Utility" and click on it. and a dialogue window will open up showing all disks currently installed, including your external disk which you should select and you will notice tabs entitled "First Aid" "Erase" "RAID" and "Restore"

Follow the instructions found there and the very best of luck to you.

Accidental ejection

try turning the external drive off & wait a minute then turn it back on.if it works just drag what you want to transfer from your mac to the external drive and it should copy it to the drive.
