You did not explainhaow you connected all your equipment together. Connect your PC and PS3 into the 5 port switch. Connect your DSL modem into the 5 port switch, if there is a WAN/internet port on the 5 port switch then connect the DSL model into this port. You may need to power off the 5 port switch wait a 1 min and power up the 5 port switch again so it can setup an IP address table for the connected ports. If this still does not work the replace the 5 port switch with a normal 5 port hub.
switches cannot be connected to the Cable modem....
because NAT will not be enabled in cable modem....so there wont be any DHCP server present in the cable modem....
Nat will be enabled only in DSL modem like AT&T verizon etc....So DHCP server will be present inside DSL modem...that is the reason why switches can be connected only to the DSL modem....
With NAT enabled modem, switch will work as a switch....
With NAT disabled modem, switch will work as a hub....
This is the difference....

3 ethernet cables 1 ADSL modem and 1 hub is needed to network computers together.
1. connect telephone cable to modem and switch it on.
2. one end of an ethernet cable is connected to the modem . consider this master ethernet cable. connect the other end of this to the master hub port.
3.now connect pc and any hub port with another ethernet cable(ec) say ec1
4. likewise ec2 to another pc .
try this out to get net in both pc's
If your hub has 4 or 5 connectors, connect one port to your router. This device will NOT work when connected to your cable modem, as the hub does not manage IP addresses like a router does. Hope this helps ... the remaining ports will feed internet, but not provide Internet addresses to a computer.
Is the modem a DSL or cable model?
Does the router have one ethernet port and a WAN port?
Normally the broadband modem is connected to the WAN port on the router and the ethernet port on the router is then connected to the hub/switch and the computers are then connected to the hub/switch.
The modem gets an unique IP address from your Internet Service Provider and then the router then issues Class "C" IP addresses to each computer that is connected to the switch/hub.
Any network device, PC or otherwise, needs an IP address assigned. So, yes, both your PC's need an IP address.
Assuming your ISP lets you have multiple PC's(IP's) then you'll have to use the IP space provided by your ISP. The default gateway would also be provided by your ISP.
The way you SHOULD do this is to use a router, linksys for example. This way you can setup you private network(I.E. 192.168.10.10 for example). This will hide and protect YOUR private space from would be hackers. The router would use the REAL IP address on the outbound side to talk to the cable/DSL modem.
btw...you can use the ipconfig command at the command prompt(I.E. a DOS window) on your working machine to see the DHCP address and gateway that was assigned. Sound like your ISP only allows you one IP. The router solution above will fix that and let you connect as many as you want because the ISP will only see the one IP from the router.
Does the xbox work when connected directly to the internet (not through the hub)? If so, there may be some kind of conflict related to sharing your internet connection between the PC and xbox, and I'd reccommend getting a router instead of a hub.
Sounds like you may need what is called a "Crossover Cable' connecting your router to your hub, or if either device has an uplink port, use it on one device to connect to normal port on other device. Here are instructions for making your own cables:
