Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have a 55 inch rear projection. The picture is off center to the left and tiltes slightly up. You can only tell if there are words/credits on the screne. The picture itself is not distorted and looks good.

Thanks for responding. The M# is 55p8288a. I have been in the TV menu, and I thought I got the crosses aligned. Did you mean the service menu. I have read a bit about this. If so, is that something a novice should enter. I no longer have the manual.

    Thanks

You have a convergence problem If you have a manual it will help or on screen menus. The red, green, and blue signals need to be alligned. Green is the reference which you match the red and blue to. Post the model if you need more help.

I go to www.retrevo.com for user manuals. There is one listed for your 55p8288 projector. I would o there and the instructions seem pretty straight forward to me. Page 8, turn on the image control and on page 9 align the red and the blue.

Having done convergence on a few different device what I liked was the more patient I was and the more time I spent on it the better it got.

Also there is a reset at the end of the instructions to reset if you get the adjustments a little too far out.

So I recommend trying things and don't be afraid of resetting. When you get the hang of it it should look pretty good.

If it doesn't, then there is another issue. But the problem isn't that bad and should be correctable.

Convergence problem---set uses two of the STK-392-560 convergence chips.

Both will have to be replaced and set adjusted with remote.

Total parts cost on EBAY under 25 dollars.

I can tell you what is involved.

see attached photo of typical convergence problem and typical convergence chip.

If this told you something you did not know, rate this solution as very helpful as I do this here for free.

55 inch mitsubishi rear projection tv red lamp out of adjustment

Have convergence IC's replaced. I believe this unit uses STK-392-570 convergence IC's Only one has gone bad but replace them both, because if one has failed then the other is not far behind, for Blue and Green. One handles Red, One handles BLUE and Grn. There are only two of them in the set, They are the two largest IC's in the entire set.

Set all convergence controls to center and then manually set all tubes to as close as possible to coincide with each other. Then, use those electronic potentiometers to fine tune the picture.

You would need the service manual for that adjustment. It is outlined in the service manual on how to adjust the tilt. It is a mechanical adjustment. You can get the service manual emailed to you instantly after purchase at this link.

Tilted tv screen

The complete convergence for the Philips projection sets usually requires a clear plastic overlay which fits over the screen and has many precisely spaced black dots. The remote is then used to enter the service mode and converge all 3 colors onto the dots, and then the settings are stored in an EPROM IC. This should only be done by someone with experience with the Philips sets.
