I have a canon mp730 printer. I ordered a new printhead for it after having printer problems. After I took out the old printhead to get a part number and reinserted it until new part arrives, I did a printhead alignment to make sure everything was still in working order. It did run through the process fine. The printhead was sitting in the middle, we then turned off the printer. When we restarted it the printhead and cartridges will not return to the center. I have already done the reset process in the test mode, and have unplugged the printer overnight. Nothing will help. The error reads wrong cartridge, but after I do the reset, it goes away, but still doesn't do anything. It seems like the gears could be jammed, but does not make noise like they are. Is there some way to return the cartridges to the middle manually. I can not move with my hands, won't budge.

Just start the printer by making it ON by pressing power button.as the printer moves slightly from its orignal set position remove the power cord as quickly as you can .so the head will be moved from its orignal position and after that there is a rubber belt in the printer which is black in colour just pull it slowly so the head will come nearer and nearer to you remove the cartridges as it comes in the exact position.

You could clean the black ink cartridge. For this you need to remove the black ink cartridge which is present in the printer. In order to clean the laser or scanner block you could use a cotton swab as it would fully clean the dirt. You need to clean the grime and the dried ink present in the printer. This would remove all the hindrances which prevent the ink from flowing. Cleaning the printer heads would also help to solve the problem.

Canon Multipass MP730...placed new ink cartridge in twice now...nothing be printed...what could the problem be?


For me, there can be 3 problems, and I will do what I do in order.

1. The print head may be clogged. To unclog it, you have to remove the 4 cartridges, remove the print head (lever up, and remove the printhead), run those silvery things under a luke warm tap and low flow and pressure for about 5 minutes or until no ink drips out, and dont aim for those silvery things, do not touch the contacts on the back. Install the printhead, cartidges, lever down and go for it.

2. Well still no results... Get the printhead out of there again as your machine is getting old and tarnished. Get a sharp knife. Stroke down on those contact things downward only with your knife, a couple of columns at a time, couple of strokes per column. Put everything back, lever down, and go for it.

3. A new print head $50. Sounds a lot, but the last cartridges were $1.69 a pop. These cartidges last quite some time, as long as you fire something through the printer each week. This has to be the most economical bubble jet printer in the world. I have 3 of them.

I have a Canon MulitPass MP730. Wrong Cartridge message.


It's worth repairing, That error on a Canon is saying that the printhead is bad, not your cartridges. The part number for your printhead is stamped on the side of the printhead could be QY6-0049-000 but I'm not sure.

Alarm on screen says wrong cartridge, so I replaced the after market ones with canon and still wont work


On Canon machines that error means you need a new printhead, the cartridge is the printhead and not the inks. I believe that printhead is QY6-0049-000 but the part number is stamped on the side of the printhead.

It keeps giving the alert wrong cartridge and wont print.I installed for the 1st time ink power cartridge instead of canon's and it won't do nothing........... these cartridge are half price but look...


Wrong cartridge refers to the printhead and not the inks. This machine, when the printhead goes bad gives that error. A new printhead is around $60.00 for that machine. QY6-0064-000.

My Canon Multipass Mp730 says wrong cartridge and the alarm light is blinking. I changed the cartridge, but it's still the same message. I turned it off and unplugged it, still the same message. It won't...


I have the identical problem. After talking with the Canon Service Center here in Arizona, they stated that the problem is with the Printhead, not the ink cartridges. The choices are to buy a new Printhead, which are very hard to find now, or buy a new printer. I found one last Printhead in Tucson, which I can purchase of $50.00, and install it myself. Otherwise, the Service Center can do it for the price of the part, plus $65.00 labor.

Seems like the logical solution is to buy a new printer. The PIXMA MX330 is $99.00 or the PIXMA MX860 is $199.00, which are similar replacements.

I am leaning toward purchasing a new printer. We've had the MP730 for about 5 years.

Canon mp 730 prints colours BUT NO BLACK


Sounds like you need a printhead, QY6-0064-000 around $40.00. The only other thing that could do that is the purge assembly if it's not cleaning the black part of the printhead properly.

What's the message?? If it says wrong cartridge then you need a new printhead.

Mp730 message wrong cartridge??? I did install a new ink cartridge, no help so I cleaned and reinstalled the print head after shutting it down for 30 mininutes no help. Still geting the same message....


That message means that you need a new printhead, the holder where your inks go. the part number is QY6-0064-000 around $40.00. easy to change yourself, instructions are included.

Canon MP730 not printing. Printhead cleaning doesn't help.


You may need new print heads. They are around $50. Or, you could do this: Take the print head out of the printer, and run warm water from the tap (not high pressure), over the ports for about 5 minutes. Ink will drop out of the jets. Dont touch the electrical contact end of this head. This may clean the head enough so it works again. If not you need a new print head.
