    I can not get my linksys card to connect through a netgear router. I was told it would. I figured it was a problem with the card. I was recently at my dad;s house who has a linksys router..... I was able to connect instantly! It must be an incompatability between the two products?

    i had to change the settings on the router to lower security levels. thanks for your help

    What is the IP address that you are getting for your wireless connection?

    It's possible that your netgear router settings is not set properly on your linksys card. Do you know if you have a security enabled on your Netgear router.

WHAT ARE THE PORT RANGES FOR ADDRESSES

Usable tcp and udp ports range from 1 to 65535. However you should not need to open any ports by default. Most routers include a stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall. This is a fancy way of saying the router inspects the packet on it's way out to the internet when a computer on the inside of the firewall sends it out to the internet. The firewall will only allow connections from the internet on that TCP or UDP port if it returns from the original destination. For example, if you send a packet requesting the web page at cisco.com, the firewall will only allow traffic back into your network on TCP port 80 from the web server at cisco.com. If a packet from any other IP address tries to piggyback into your network through tcp port 80, the firewall will block it.

The only reason to open ports on your firewall is to allow a server inside your network to receive unsolicited traffic e.g. a web server inside your network may need TCP port 80 and 443 (HTTP and HTTPS) opened if you want to be able to access it from the internet. A mail server may need port 25 and 110 open for SMTP/POP e-mail. However, most home users do not host their own mail or web servers.

I can connect to the access point but it will not let me connect to the internet.

Do you own the access point?
If so, after connecting/authenticating to it, start Internet Explorer, and access the web-server "inside" the access point. Click to select the 'WAN' settings, and confirm that the access point is getting an IP-address from the Internet.

How do i get my dns numbers from my isp provider,and what is a isp provider.

Best bet is to open up your browser and type in www.whatismyip.com
this will give you your ip address from your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)
If You need some DNS numbers (Domain Name Server), I use open DNS. they are pretty good at keeping out dodgy or rogue sites. Web sites have actual numbers for their address, not names. When you type in www.anynamehere.com, the computer goes to the DNS server to look up the name and get the number (IP address) just like looking up a phone book.
If you choose to use Open DNS as the look up server. use these numbers in your settings.
DNS1 208.67.222.222
DNS2 208.67.220.220
If you need to put in a gateway (like a front door to go out to the net) you will need to go into your router or modem settings to find this number, Or just call your ISP to get the information. You will need your email username & password before you ring
Good Luck

I'm unable to connect to the internet using my linksys wireless-g pci adapter to a Netgear router. It lists the router in the wireless network range, but cannot connect to it. Suggestions?

Go into the network settings through the browser. Go the where you change the "Channel" the router is transmitting with and change that to channel 6, instead of automatic. If you can access to router but not the internet, go to internet options through the browser and go to the connection tab and uncheck the box that deals with proxy server. That box should be unchecked and the box for automatically detect settings should be checked.

Wireless router problems

your computer is only connected to the signal coming from the router that's why it's saying connected but it seems that your router is not properly configured to provide internet access since your dns server is the same as your default gaetway. it could be that the your router is not in sync with the modem.
- if it's working before, tyr to power cycle everything by turning all the devices off then turn on the modem first, wait for all the lights on the modem to turn on then power on the router and the computer.

- if the router is for initial setup, kindly provide me you ISP, brand and model of the modem and how you connect the modem to the router and tell me if how you access the internet directly from the modem.

Can't Connect to the Internet

Hi,

Two things you can try before trying your browser/Internet connection:
1. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection Icon, click on Repair. Allow the computer time to repair its WiFi connection and some other settings;
2. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection Icon, click on Status. Click on properties button, select TCP/IP (Internet Protocol), click on Properties button, verify that the option "Obtain IP address automatically is ticked, OK, OK.
3. In your browsers, verify/modify settings:
In Mozilla, click on Tools, Options, Advanced tab, Network tab, Settings button, tick "Auto-detect proxy settings for this connection, OK, OK;
In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, LAN settings button, check "Automatically detect settings" (& pls make sure there is no check mark on the Proxy server), OK, Advance tab, check Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections.
In Opera, Tools, Preferences, Advanced tab, Network, Proxy server buttons, check "Enable HTTP 1.1 for proxy, OK, OK.

Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information. Hope that this be of some help/idea.

Good luck and kind regards.
