You need to access the Airbag ECU (Electronic Control Module) using suitable diagnostic equipment connected to the data link connector of the car in order to erase all faults - DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) memored, unlock and reset the Airbag ECU. Then the Airbag light will turn OFF after approx. 4 seconds, ignition ON.

THE AIR BAG SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REMOVED, CLEANED, AND REINSTALLED. ITS LOCATED BEHIND THE CENTER PORTION OF THE FRONT GRILL (4 SCREWS) THE SENSOR IS ATTACHED ON THE FRONT SIDE OF THE RADIATOR MOUNT. REMOVE THE SENSOR (2 BOLTS) CLEAN THE BRACKET AT THE MOUNTING POINTS WITH A WIRE BRUSH OR EMORY CLOTH. ALSO CLEAN THE BOLTS AND WASHERS TO BARE METAL. REINSTALL. THE PROBLEM IS AFTER TIME THE CONTACT WITH THE FRAME CORRODES AND THE SENSOR LOOSES ITS NEGATIVE GROUND, WHICH IT NEEDS TO OPERATE PROPERLY.

You need to either have the dealer reset it or you can do it if you have VAG-COM. Vag-Com is a piece of diagnostic software that uses a special cable to hook up to your car. You can read/clear codes among a ton of other things. It's very common for VW guys to have. Much easier than going to the dealer if you can find someone close to you. The guys over at www.tdiclub.com are always more than willing to help out a fellow VWer. There is a list of guys with the software - you can actually do a search to see if there's anyone near you. www.vagcomlocator.com or go to www.tdiclub.com

the air bag light will only show if the ignition was turned on while it was disconnected.
it will defo need to be pluged into the computer to be put out but some smaller garages will have the software to do this and will be a little cheaper.here in ireland VW wanted 50euro to do mine but a small garage done it for 30euro.
you can buy code finders/reset gadgets on ebay but might not be worth it for one job compared to $130.
my suggestion would be to get the main dealer to do it if a normal automotive shop cannot access it.
