Instead of opening the attachment, first save it to a folder on your computer. After you save it to a known folder, go to this website to convert the .docx file to a .doc file and then you can open it with notepad, wordpad, or previous versions of MS Word.

Please rate this solution, thanks.

The docx is a newer format which is not supported by the program your using you need to upgrade the program or use a docx to doc converter, or ask the person to send the same file to you in doc format

Hi,

Thanks for posting in FixYa.

Since the document is written in MS Word 2007 and here you are unable to open it.

It is because you have the lower version of MS word installed on your PC. I also have the same problem.

To resolve the issue you need to install and use MS word 2007 which creates files in docx extension rather to create in doc .

Have a Nice day. Dont forget to vote me.

If you are unable to use MS Word 2007, you can tell the person to create the document in Ms Word 2003 or to create it in Doc Extension.

    Hi There,

You can opt for two of the method listed here if you wish to convert a .docx file to .doc, so that you can view the contents.

    • If you already have an older version of Microsoft Office you can install the Office Compatibility Pack,
which adds .docx open/edit/save functionality to Office 2000/2003. This
download is 27.5MB in size and means you can quickly upgrade your
existing Office installation to cater for .docx files.

    • If you don't have Microsoft Office you can open the files using Microsoft Word Viewer, or use some of the online converters to turn docx files into doc:
    Regards

How to save a word 2007 document to be compatible with Word 97-2003

If you want to save a document to be compatible to open in word 97-2003 you cannot simply automatically save the document because it will save as a .docx. Therefore you cannot click on the disk icon at the top to save your document.

1: Go to the at the top left corner
2: Choose Save As. Another menu will appear
3: Choose Word 97-2003 Document from the list
4: Choose where to save your file.
5: After the file has been saved as a .doc you can now just press save instead of save as. You can also press on the save symbol (a floppy disk) to automatically save the file now.
Yes you can but you must download a compatibility pack from Microsoft. This will enable you to open Word 2007, PowerPoint 2007, and more in your Office 2003 program. You can also download the free Open office program. It will open .docx files already. Go to the Microsoft website to download Word viewer
And you will also need Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats.

Attachment - how to open?

A "docx" document is a Microsoft Word 2007 version of the old Word 2003 "doc" document and not backward compatible. (Thanks MS!)

If you get these a lot and also have to edit them, the best way to do it is to install the Compability Pack from Microsoft on your computer (link).

If you do not use Microsoft Office (that includes Mac and Linux users), or you don't want to install any software, you can convert it online (link).

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

I have sent a word document created in vista, and have sent it to an XP user. They cannot open or view the document. How do I change the settings in Vista to resend the document?

You need to make sure that the file extension is correct, for example .doc because there are others that a .docx extension as well. One thing is that make sure whenever you are saving a word document try to save it as Word 97-2003 document, in that way it can open to any other Microsoft Word application without thinking what kind of operating system does the computer have.
