Question about HP Pavilion dv1000 Notebook
So I've got an hp pavilion dv 1000 notebook pc. I downloaded the audio controller driver from the hp website after installing windows xp. When I run the audio controller driver installer it runs its course and shows a dialog box with the results of the installation, which reads FAILURE. If i try to unsinstall the driver (it installs it to the c:\swsetup\sp28481) using the uninstall tool included in the 'installation' it says it can't find the delete file so it can't uninstall. At this point I can run the device manager and try to install the driver through the hardware manager. I've been lucky sometimes when making it find the driver for me but I usually have a very hard time figuring out what I need to do to be successful on the first attempt. Furthmore with the 'FAILED' driver installation even if the sound is working the dialog box showing the result of the installation pops up everytime I start windows.
Am I using the wrong driver? is there a way to tell?
The best way to deal with the outdated HP update is to have an online chat with HP support - it is their software and their machine that is causing you problems. If you go to the support page for your machine, you should be able to find "Contact HP" at the bottom of the page. This should lead you to an online chat option, which I would suggest to be the best way to deal with the uninstall issue. Even if you locate the proper driver through device manager, this will not solve the uninstall problem. HP techs have numerous tools available to them that they do not share with us as users of their products...
As an alternative, if you have system restore turned on, I would recommend going to a restore point prior to the time the driver (sp) was installed. This would solve the uninstall problem, if there is a working restore point available to you. Of course, we all know that doesn't always work either, but it works more often than not, so long as the function is enabled. Then you may choose to contact HP for the proper driver, or seek it out.
In order to search for a newer driver, you should take note of the version that was installed by the HP sp (which you could try to reinstall just in case the download was faulty). After making sure you are aware of the exact equipment and the driver that did not function properly, it is generally useful to obtain the driver from the manufacturer directly if possible. There are other alternatives with MS update catalog, or with several web products which will scan your system and update drivers for you.
