We are looking to purchase a Cannon Image Runner c3170u. We have a LAN with an IBM AS/400 on the LAN. We would like to print directly from the AS/400 to the Cannon Image Runner. My IBM vendor is telling me to make sure the Copier is IPDS capable. That there is a chip that fits into the Copier. Once the chip is installed, we can configure the copier as a normal printer on the AS/400.
Does that make sense? What is the recommended and easiest way to make the Cannon Image Runner c3170u appear as a device to the AS/400?
Thanks.
Thanks. An AS/400 is an IBM mid-range computer. It has had several name changes over the years (System I, iSeries and I beleive today they just call it an "I". At one time it was the most popular business computing system in the world. You can set up partitions to run just about any OS in the world. (Linux, Unix, Oracle, AIX, OS/400) You cannot set up a Windows partition however.
Anyway, thanks for the advice. The copier is supposed to be delived tomorrow, network and IPDS capable.
I am not sure what a AS/400 is, but I do know what chip they are asking about. It is called a Network boot Rom. It is like allowing the copier to be a printer. If you look in service mode under display version. It will have a "N" for networking and "C" for a stand alone copier- no printing. Also, some of the new copier come with it and have other options like faxing. Also, are you buying a new one or used? Also, are you going to use it alot? You may want to go with the c4080 or the faster model c5850 copies a minute. Take from me I work on all of them and the c3170c is not a work horse.
