If you have just one drive then it might be possible you have lot of unwanted files in it. Recovery files dont take too much space usually. So best suggestion so to go for some cleaning.
You can use ccleaner here is the link
http://www.ccleaner.com/
That will remove lot of unwanted stuff on your system
check if you some hidden files too.. you can open any folder-->tools-->folder options-->view-->show me hidden files
check in you C drive or main drive you might have lot of unwanted folders in there. Remove all unwanted programs from Add/remove programs in control panel
and finally dont forget recycle bin
Hope it helps !!

Hi Donna. The properties of your hard drive shown when you open Computer (My Computer in Windows XP) help you to see your used and free space. Even though your hard drive has a capacity of 160 GB, useable space is always less because the operating systems were designed to allocate a percentage of the total to be used for various operations necessary for smooth sailing. Right clicking the hard drive icon and selecting properties opens to you tools used to keep your hard drive healthy along with information regarding the hard drives % of use. Try it out if you haven't already. Good Day

Hello I have an ascer aspire ast 180 ea381b with 160 gb of memory and it is always telling me that I am low on disk space. the C drive has 71.9 GB but only 4.3 M free. The D driver has 71.6 GB and 68.4...

4.3 GB is very less for current day windows versions (you have not specified what version of windows is installed in your computer). Please move some of your files like music, movies, photographs and documents to the D drive and free up the C drive. Ensure you free up atleast 15 GB in your C drive. Also try removing / uninstalling unwanted programs installed in your computer.

I have a Compaq Presario F700 laptop. It was telling me I have low disk space on Presario_RD (D). I have already deleted alot files and programs and I have also did a disk cleanup and ran the disk...

"low disk space on Presario_RD (D)"
This looks like you are running low on disk space on your D: drive, not your C:. If you were deleting files and programs, I bet it was on C:
It is now very common for manufacturers to split the hard drive into 2 partitions, C: for everyday use and a smaller D: partition that hold recovery files to restore the computer to a factory install state. If your computer was set up this way, the D: is not suppose to be used but I have run into systems were backup programs are putting the backup files on D: and filling it up.
You need to find out what is writing to D: and stop it and then remove the files it placed there.
Be very careful with D:, if you remove the wrong files you may not be able to reinstall windows if you have a serious problem unless you have created recovery CDs.

Hard drive wiped :(

No. Not if the partition table was re-written on the 160GB and any data was written to it. If there is info that MUST be retrieved, there are pay services that can bit-retrieve and reconstruct some files. There is no guarantee.

I had the same problem. I finally got a knowledgeable tech at Gateway who knew that a patch had to be downloaded. I'm sorry but I don't have the link anymore but you might be able to find it in there white papers now that you know that it exists

you don't use disk cleanup first, then disk defragmentation, and you'll see more room. Also, files go on D, not programs. got backup?
