Question about Printers & Copiers

Open Question

Canon MP730 is electrically dead.

Hi, I am looking for some help!

1) The Canon MP730 Printer will not power on. It is electrically dead! Yes, I made sure there is AC power at the printer.

2) The 3 year old printer is a home printer and has not been used much. The failure happen when I highlighted some text on the computer and tried to copy it directly to the printer. The printer did not like that move and the alarm came on and it started ******* and burping. My reaction was to turn it off but it would not do so and after about 30 seconds it went dead.

3) As expected the Canon people said they could not help.

4) I ordered a Service Manual off the Web and identified a fuse on the power supply PCB which was buried deep in the printer. The troubleshooting guide offered little help; said to check the fuse and if it was blown to replace the power supply PCB.

5) To my surprise the fuse is NOT blown. The service manual has only a wiring diagram (block diagram), and supplied NO power supply voltages, or test points. Why does a company like Canon do that? Duh! I do not expect a Service Manual to supply full blown schematics showing all the logic, etc, but a few test points, I do expect.

6) Anyway, the power supply board looks normal, showing no heating or burning and the large diodes are okay. There were no bulged capacitors. I did not check every component on the board, and my feeling is that the power supply is okay. I checked the voltages to chassis on the seven wires from the power supply board and to the main SPCNT logic board, and got the following:
Brn= 7.35V
Red= 4.97 V
Org= 0.0 V
Yel= 24.0 V
Grn= 0.0 V
Blu= 27.64 V
Purple= 0.0 V

7) I am concerned with the Orn, Grn, and Purple outputs which are showing zero volts to chassis. These could be grounds or they could represent a problem. Without better information I have know way to know.

8) I have two questions:
1) Can anyone speak to my problem, and
2) where do I get a power supply PCB, possibly used and how much will it cost. There has to be a relay, either mechanical or solid state somewhere between the low current On/Off switch, and the higher current input to the machine. I have not been able to find it and perhaps someone can speak to that, also.

Thank you----Layne Wilson

I am trying to install my canon MP730. I have lost the installation disc. Can I install it from the internet?

Yes. Actually this is better because you will get the latest drivers and utilities. Just make sure you DOWNLOAD (as in Save, not Run) the installers and run them after you have closed all your other programs, otherwise you might get into serious trouble if the download was somehow corrupted.

  • Press resume button 2 times and then release both button
  • Green LED indicator will blinking and then stopped blinking.
  • When the Power LED lights in green, press resume button 4 times.
  • Press power button and the printer power will off. Otherwise off, depress again power button.
  • And the turn on the printer again, your printer canon iP90 should be response as normal.
You may not see a paper jam.

This may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.

First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.

If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.

And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.
