External disc reader/ burner

Short answer: Yes, it will.

Slightly longer answer: 3 things will be important:
1) The version of USB your computer has will matter (the higher the version, the better; recommend a minimum of USB 2.0)

2) The version of operating system is important. Assuming you're on a Windows/Intel-based system, XP would be the lowest/oldest OS that would be practical

3) Speed of processor and amount of RAM plays an important role here too - again, higher number on the processor, and more RAM will (generally speaking) provide a better experience.

Oh, and depending on what you want to do with it, you'll need software, such as CD/DVD authoring software (try www.tucows.com).

Good luck!

I just bought a USB External/GE24 Super Multi Rewriter, with 24x speed. my problem is, when it burns, it burns EXTREMELY slow. I used to have an 8x burner, that would burn in about 5 minutes, and this one...

Hello mklvon,
Welcome to FixYa.Com!
I would like to recommend that you first take a look at your computer. Check if you have a USB 2.0 High Speed port. Reason is because although you have a USB 2.0 Ext Multi-Burner but your connecting it to a USB 1.0 or USB 1.1 port, the Multi-Burner will only run as fast as the USB port can transfer data.
Another time I would like to recommend is for you to take a look at the USB cable itself. As it is an Ext. Multi-Burner it may require a power USB port w/c is the reason why most Ext. Burner's have a Y-connector that is one USB port on one side and the other side branches off to 2 USB ports as it required extra power. If it is, you may want to consider your options as to getting a powered USB port.
And lastly, I would recommend that you take a look at the type of discs you are burning on to. Not all DVD R are the same. Whilst some have 24x speed some can have 4x speeds which can also affect the burn speeds.

How long does it take to burn a 2 hour movie? I have 512 MG DDR SDRAM with 3200+ AMD Athlon XP Processor.

That will depend a bit on the speed of the dvd drive and the media speed. Basically should take about 30-40 minutes. On a faster drive it should take about 25. A 2 hour movie should almost fill a dvd 4.7gb in size. Those times are for a internal burner not a external usb burner.

A dual layer dvd should take twice as long but from my experience it doesn;t seemt to take more than a few minutes longer than a normal dvd which is strange but nice.

Make sure you have lots of space on C and try not to be running anything other than the burner software to max out on the speed. And don't worry if you toast a few dvd's at first. They are cheap.

NEED TO DOWNLOAD DRIVER

1) there are no drivers....your operating system has whats needed to operate it.
2) hooking it to a netbook will require you to have it put in an encloser that has a power source, as you can not run the drive with out power supply.
3) you would be better off buying an external DVD Burner, One designed for your purpose. That unit you have will not operate on its own, and you can not hook it directly to your netbook
