Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have several video tapes that are currently unwatchable due to flashing or fluttering and also affecting the sound.I have established that it is not the video recorder. Someone told me that if you wind them forward, then back and thump the tape casing, it will cure it. Not successful.

Picture during playback is badly distorted

There could be several reasons for badly distorted pictures. considering the age of the unit as DV camcoder which I am guessing would be quite a bit. Most likely the heads have worn out and need replacement. I am assuming you have this problem with newly recorded tapes being played on a TV directly from the camcorder. For this you may also need to check if you are using new tapes and whether the recording mode is PAL or NTSC as per the TV format.

Alternate test would be to play back a previously recorded tape back from the camcorder. That way at least you can establish if the problem is the read head or the write head or the tape itself.

Keep getting line running across the film after any filming like louvers, quite unwatchable.

Sounds like dirty heads. Use a head cleaning tape recommended by Panasonic. After a few tries if it does not improve it would be best to take the camera for a professional clean including the tape path.

My tape was stuck in my camera. When I finally got it out and replayed it , it has lines running across the picture. When I did get it out part of the tape was hanging out so I rewinded it by hand. When...

The tape has obviously suffered damage and the cause is probably the internal mechanisms require service or replacement.
You can't repair the tape other than cutting out a damaged section and splicing together, not a good option.
I'd try running the footage through a Time Base Corrector to clean up the signal. In many cases this can restore unwatchable footage.

Light bulbs are flashing with constant pulsing noise

It sounds like you have a lose connection for the lighting. It may be at the light bulb socket or even at the door switch. It also could be a lose wire going to or from these items. with a little detective work you should be able the bad connection.
I hope this helps :)

I have stored my used 8mm tapes in a drawer for several years and when I recently tried to play them I just get snow and nothing else. I don't know if my camera is broken or the tapes have somehow been...

Hi,
Looks as if Fungus growth (which is quite normal due to prolonged storage and humidity) has covered the magnetic tapes inside your 8mm cassettes. Please do not try to Play these tapes on your camera as it can lead to clogging of cameras' video and audio heads. You can get these tapes cleaned by a qualified service personnel.

Hope this solves your problem. Thanks.

Pixelated recordings

clean heads and tape transport with head cleaning tape, worked for me. had to run the tape 3 times at 10 second intervals with a 30 second cool down between runs. Dont clean for more than 10 seconds at a time as the cleaner tape heats up head and will fuse dirt onto head if overheated.

Just Clean yer Head with a cleaner cassette, get the type that does wet the dry... If that don't do it then you will need to replace the transfer belt that rotates the tape spindle as it probably isn't turning it at the right speed due to loss of its elasticity.

Image and sound problems at playback

your tape guides are out of calibration on all your pre - recorded tapes , or they are out of adjustment ( maybe even loose ) now ; - - put your camcorder close , next to your ear ? and . . . listen ! to a new tape in play mode - if you hear a fluttering sound like a deck of cards being shuffled softly , the camera is damaging all your tapes and needs alignment ;
