Used a new battery. Sorry this did not solve the problem. Neither did a software upgrade. Any other ideas would be welcome. Thanks for your prompt idea.

there is a capacitor that might have shorted or a loose connection in your flash.

Why does my camera not capture any picture? Whichever mode I use, it does not capture any picture regardless of how many times I click the button.

Flash flicker is the camera trying to get enough light to focus, It occurs when you press the shutter release part of the way down.
Try the same thing outside, ensure you press the shutter real ease all the way down. If it still does not fire, switch the lens to manual focus (sliding switch on the side of the lens, move from A to M) If the camera shoot then, the camera is struggling to auto focus.

HOW TO TURN ON FLASH

Flash should pop up automatically when you operate camera in easy mode (green square on dial selector) in low light conditions. If using in manual modes press the button on the left side of the lens mount. To fire the flash without taking a picture press the button used to zoom out when viewing pictures.
If your flash does not work at all then there is probably a fault with the charging circuit or firing circuit.

Will a sigma 170-500mm apo dg lens work with my canon d30 camera .... d30 not the 30 d

Yes, assuming you get the Sigma with a Canon mount. The D30 has the Canon EF mount like other Canons. Sigma makes lenses with a variety of mounts, and a lens with a Nikon mount, for example, will not fit onto a Canon.

in the take picture mode, press the button that has an image of the flash on it (the top of the circle) on the right, and keep pressing it until you've selected the image that shows the flash crossed out.

Pop up flash not working

You probably need to change the setting wheel on the top of your camera to either auto or Program (P) to do what you are wanting.

Pictures are blurry

this is a symbol for a low light condition. Either increase the light by opening curtains using in-direct light or just use a flash.

Error code 22

ERR 22: CF DRIVER
DESCRIPTION: This error occurs when image data cannot be written to the CF card. This error can occur when the CF card is not fully seated in the camera or if the D30 does not detect a card-ready signal within a specified time limit or when the CF card is not usable because it has been corrupted or physically damaged. It can also occur when the camera's battery level is insufficient to completely write the file to the CF card. REMEDIAL MEASURE: Use the DC Coupler or recharge the battery first. If the error continues to occur with sufficient power available to the camera, check that the CF card is properly inserted. If that's not the problem, then try replacing the CF card. If that does not solve the problem, have the EOS D30 and one of the CF cards that is causing the problem examined by a qualified service technician.

Built in flash

Have you given it a gentle press down with the button depressed? This will release it sometimes, Other than that it is a repair shop job or send it back if you are able.
