Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
If your lens received impact damage it will need to be replaced. This is about a $150 bill at Canon. One thing that can happen is the flex cables that attach the lens to the camera system board may have come loose. You will have to have the camera opened by a qualified tech to see if this may be a solution.

I'm assuming you have a lens error which is giving you the restart message. It is kind of misleading, but to restart the camera means to power cycle the camera or remove and reinsert the battery. If you do have a lens error, if restarting the camera doesn't work, you'll need to get the lens fixed if to remove the error.
