SOURCE: freezer works but refrig has 60 degree temp .evap coil is caked

Hi: Did you check the defrost heater itself? I checked Jennair and Sears parts to no avail. If you didn't check the heater it will be at the bottom of the freezer behind where you removed the back cover. A glass tube with a coil in it. If the coil or tube is broken replace that insead. I hope I helped, Jeff I found a website with the defrost timer, but not the location of the timer on the fridge. http://www.appliancepartsworldwide.com/store_SearchResults.aspx?S=1131392&ST=PBM

The best way to test the element is with a ohm-meter.  If it has continuity the heater is good.  It could also be defrost limit thermostat.  It shuts off the defrost heater when it gets too hot to prevent the plastic from melting.  It is wired in series with the defrost element, and should have continuity below 45 degrees fahrenheit.

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out ACMEHowTo.com for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.

The freezer & refrigerator will either turn on & cool and or freeze but won't shut off. Or they will not come on at all and get warm or thaw.

The newest defrost feature in modern fridges is the electronic adaptive defrost control board. *Maytag has one version, to put this adaptive defrost style of fridge into defrost, short with a small screwdriver between L1 and test on the adaptive defrost board, wait 3 seconds and you should hear a "click" noise from the relay and the fridge will shut off and go through a defrost cycle.

Freezer is icing over and fridge is not keeping food cold

I really believe your adaptive defrost located inside the fresh food compartment and inside the control panel is defective. It puts your refrigerator on a timely defrost and if defective this problem you listed in your post happens. Yes we may need to also check the defrost heater and defrost thermostat but with my experience with that type of Adaptive Defrost Control is famous for its failure.
ADAPTIVE DEFROST CONTROL Part Number 61005988 You can find it located on two of my websites. Some models like yours came with a Defrost Timer. We will need just look inside the control panel and see for sure. Here is a photo of the Adaptive defrost. If you should need to contact me please send an email or try to answer here. Problem is I don't get notifications when someone comments. [email protected]

Please rate and ask me as much as you like. Thank You, Sea Breeze

Fridge side not cold enough but freezer ok.

It is possible that your adaptive defrost assembly found inside the fresh food section and behind the control panel is defective. If not we need to check the defrost heater and the defrost thermostat. Sea Breeze

Most are inside the fresh food compartment. Some have defrost timers and others have the Adaptive Defrost Boards. Your model number will look like MSD2758GEW for example. Sea Breeze

FREEZER KEEPS WORKING NOT REFRIG

Yes, the defrost thermistat turns the element of when temps reach about 50 degrees F. The adaptive defrost tell the fridge to go into defrost. When the ice melts the defrost thermistat turns the element off.Whe can check the defrost thermistat if you like.
Your refrigerator has a adaptive defrost board inside the fresh food compartment hiding behind the control panel. That would be the first thing to consider that may be bad. But you also said you manually defrosted the refrigerator and it began doing this again about a month later. Take the model number and enter it in the search feature for model at it will take you to a page so we can look at the same refrigerator and work together to fins the answer. Below is a link click on that to look over your model. The adaptive defrost part number is 61005988
Let me know when you are ready, Thanks, Sea Breeze
