Question about EliteGroup P4VMM2 Motherboard

1 Answer

Three "beeps" before startup, but no "answer" then...

After a quiet long period of good colaboration with my PC (an Intel P4@1.6 GHz on ECS P4VMM2 mobo), one day it suddenly refused to turn on.

At first, when I pressed the "start" button I could hear the fans of the CPU and the case to start working, but nothing appeared on screen. After a few seconds I was hearing a "beep", after that a small pause (for 1-2 sec.), then two continuous "beeps", after that a small pause, then one "beep" again, then a pause, then two continuous "beeps" and after all that... silence!!!

I tried everything to make it work. I even changed case, RAM (I was using DDR and also tried a pair of SDRAM) and PSU. Now, after I did all these things, I turn my computer on and the only action it takes a few seconds after I press the button is to make three "beeps" second after second, a pause (for about 3 sec.), three "beeps" again, a 3 sec. pause and so on...

If there is somebody who can explain to me what the "beep" codes mean and how could I solve the problem, I would be very greatful!

Thank you in advance.

This link refers to Intel motherboards. I am not sure that the "beep"codes are the same for all mobo manufacturers...

By the way, as I mention above, I have already tried to replace memory dimms but the problem persists!

The same thing happened to me, I get the three beeps on startup a pause and beeps repeated. I read somewhere that this means the ram is at fault, I tried to clean the contacts with alcohol and tried to re-install in the next slot, but the fault persists. I would like to be sure its the ram before I fork out funds to replace the stick. Any assistance would be most welcome, thanks...

Memory Upgrade - from 256DDR1 to 1GB DDR1

sysa007,
EliteGroup makes two mother boards, P4VMM2, (No Revisions) & (P4VMM2 revision 8.1). Since your question states your memory is 184 pin DIMM your board must be, v 8.1. What does not make sense is the motherboard has two memory slots total.
(If you have 4 memory slots on the MB than the MB can not be the P4VMM2). Below is the link for the P4VMM2 (v8.1).
http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?CategoryID=1&TypeID=1&DetailID=436&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=45&LanID=9

The P4VMM2 v 8.1 can only use, two Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM memory modules. These sockets support up to 1GB system memory using 184-pin unbuffered non-ECC PC2100 or PC1600 DDR DIMMs. The two DIMMS you are using must run at the same speed.
Example PC2100 266MHz. OR PC1600 266MHz.
Continuous beeping means the memory is not seated correctly.
When using only one DIMM it should be inserted in the slot closest to the CPU. Re-check your memory. Remove & reseat. Make sure the latches snap closed on each stick of memory while inserting. Below is all of ECS P4VMM motherboards;
http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/SearchResult.aspx?q=P4VMM2&f=Products&MenuID=104&LanID=9

Good luck sysa007!

Motherboard and CPU

Well anything along the 2ghz line in cpu will do and as long as you get a compitibale motherboard that will be fine. If you want a specific combination the intel BX80557E2220 processor (Core 2 Duo) ans the MSI P31 Neo-F LGA775 Intel P31 1333 FSB DDR2 ATX i personally think is great. Please bear in mind you may also need new RAM for this combi.

Critical after DDR333 upgrade

cadyshack,
I got your latest version (8.1) motherboard on my screen & ECS shows your board does not support PC2700, only PC2100.
Downloaded your manual to verify this.
Notice you started having problems after upgrading RAM.
Link to your manual:
http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?detailid=436&DetailName=Manual&MenuID=7&LanID=9

This motherboard accommodates two 184-pin DDR DIMM
sockets for up to 1GB memory. Supports PC2100/PC1600
unbuffered non-ECC DDR DIMMs.

Possible cpu upgrades for p4vmm2 motherboard

I see that you have already had this answered at Techspot.com They were right when they answered you, you need to check your MB manual to see if it is capable of upgrading to the CPU that you want to use, not all MB support all CPU's just because they both have 478 pins. I looked on the ASUS website and they don't even list your MB model on there.
