See if it would play regular cd, then see if it would play dvd's. The reason is because most gaming cd now and days are dvd's and maybe your dvd-rom has a driver issue or the laser head isn't reading it. So try that first, then see if the drivers for the cd/dvd rom is working properly in the device manager. It may need a dvd coded software, try installing like powerdvd or something. If it still ain't working, and it can't play dvd's then your cd-drive could be history
try updating your windows at window update and check vendors website for its drivers. usually its plug and play sometime it happens to be hardware failure in cd-rom.
You must determine if the problem is the media you are using (CD, DVD) or the drive itself. (CD/DVD Rom)
First see if the driver is installed for the CD/DVD ROM by Right clicking My Computer and choosing Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Clikc the plus sign next to DVD/CD Rom Drives to see if there is a yellow exclamation point, or question mark. This means you need to install the correct driver. If there are no yellow exclamation marks or question marks your driver is installed properly.
Next try playing difffernt CD's to see if any of them work. Confirm they are good CD's by playing them on another device, then try them on your Compaq. If the Cd's play on another device you may possibly be experiencing read errors on the CD/DVD Rom drive. Try using a CD Laser Cleaner that will clean the laser head of the CD /DVD Rom. it looks like a CD with small brushes on the music side. This may solve a read error problem. if that does not solve your problem you may need to replace the CD/DVD Rom drive.
i think this is a common problem we encounter when DVD rom lens is becoming faulty. it can only read cd but not DVD then after some time wont read any disk at all. if your drive still has store warranty it would be best to claim the warranty. i tried fixing this kinda problem but it cost me almost the price of a new 1 LOL.
