You can use the head unit with no remote - that's just an accessory. As for the wires, the red is switched power (this gets wired in so that it only has power when the key is on - when the key is off, it turns off the radio). The yellow is constant 12v power (to maintain power to the head unit so that memory settings, treble/bass settings, and the clock are maintained when the vehicle is shut off).

    Yep, that was mislabeled. That one is either a trigger wire for a power antenna (to extend it when you turn the power on) or it can also be used as a remote turn-on lead for an amplifier.

Hi my brother in law installed my kenwood kdc-w4044u stereo into my 1999 vw golf.... works ok but when i remove the keys the memory goes... can you help

the yellow wire needs to go to a constant power source. the yellow wire controls the memory and needs to have power going to it when the key is turned off.

I have a kenwood excelon kdc-x790. i had it installed yesterday and when wired up it did nothing. But when I had another kenwood a cheaper version installed it worked fine. The kdc-x790 that I got was...

If the screen did not even light up, then you definately have a power issue. Verify that your fuse did not blow, and then that you connected the correct wires. The power wires are usually orange and red. Red being the "always on" and orange being the "switched source".

Hi,

To my knowledge most Kenwood head units uses the following wiring/color scheme:
Yellow - always on B+12VDC such as the positive terminal of the battery;
Red - switched B+12VDC such as the ACC terminal of the IGN switch;
Black - Ground/chassis;
Pink - not available
Brown - mobile phone mute
Blue - power antenna
Blue / White - remote trigger for external device
Pink / Black - external amplifier control wire
Gray - Front Right +
Gray / White - Front Right -
White - Front Left +
White / White - Front Left -
Purple - Rear Right +
Purple / White - Rear Right -
Green - Rear Left +
Green / White - Rear Left -

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
