Problem with video card (I think) in T43 Thinkpad

My T43 has a dark screen. If I shine a flashlight close to it I can see the screen but not enough to do anything. I think it may be the video card. Where is it located? My husband will change it out for me if we can find out where to go to pull it out.
Thanks for any help you can give.

The back lite button sticks down get a needle and try to lift it if this brings the display back on,then the fault is that the spring that returns the switch has broken away from the fixing
the solution is to remove the button or replace the hole top plastic fascia as that is ware the spring has been bonded to
i removed mine and set the settings to shut the monitor down after 15mins
hope this helps

It is a LCD backlight problem. The usual cause is either a bad high-voltage driver or a bad controller signal from the mainboard of your computer. You need to consult a service technicain for your machine.

Black screen

Here is a fast test for the inverter in the display. Take a small flashlight and shine it in to the bottom right corner where the windows start button should be. While shining the light in try looking at the screen. If you can see the Start icon then the inverter PS or the FL tube in the display is bad. The least expensive fix is to replace the Inverter. There exist detailed instructions for the disassembly of the display panel as well as sources for the part itself. If there is further problems contact back later.

Hi, I have a T400 and when I trun it on the Thinkpad black screen appears and does not change. Please can you help

Does it seem like the laptop is running except the display is black? Do you think it booted all the way except the screen is black? Do you hear fans running, disk drive spinning?

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

If it's a desktop try another monitor. If the other monitor works, then the original one you were using is bad. If the other monitor does not work then most likely your video card is bad.

if it's a laptop take a flashlight and shine it on the dark screen. If you look real hard you might barely see the icons on the desktop. If, so then your LCD Inverter is bad. If you don't see the desktop with a flashlight, try using a external monitor. If the external monitor displays your desktop, then the video card is good, but more than likely the screen will need to be replaced.

Vertical lines on thinkpad T43p screen.

You have identified the fault is the video card, I am in agreement. The fault is on the motherboard and a replacement motherboard is the only fix. This may not be a cost effective solution, I would recommend you put your money towards a new laptop.

Ibm thinkpad t43 backlight inverter issue

Did you say the the video output flickers on and off when you connect an external monitor to the video output. If the inverter is faulty this would not affect the video output and the external monitor would not flicker but if the external monitor flickers it would point to a video card problem.
