As mentioned in the question. When we turn the tv on the screen goes light grey with the red-ish 2 inch wide vertical line on the left hand. When showing actual tv programme the fault appears as excessive brightness and contrast. The fault is intermittent in that it occasionally comes back to normal but this happens randomly.
Replace the Tcon board or check the cables going in and out of it

turn it off for around 30 min..try it again, then let us know what you find...could be a control board issue

The problem is the actual PDP panel address chips blown or a faulty ribbon cable to the PDP or if your lucky it may be a dry joint - Tap the ribbon while the set is on very lightly on all cables with something plastic and see if the black line goes away - if so your lucky and its an easy but fiddly repair.

PFM-42V1 has no ability to receive channels through aerial / cable.
You can hook direct video cables from dvd player, vcr, PC etc.
