Question about HP Officejet 4315 All-in-One Printer

Open Question

Follow up HP4315 vs MacBook

Thanks for your response.  I'll have to go with Door #1, the wireless adapter set up as a node.  I can probably get someone to help me..
Since I posted my initial query I have looked for an adapter. Checked out a couple of links to no avail.  One particular adapter was listed as compatible with at least two dozen HP printers, but not the 4315.  At that point I gave up & used the USB cable to print.
Could you possibly provide a link to a wireless adapter for a 4315?  In any case, thank you so much for your assistance. Liz / Atlanta

SOURCE: how to install hp4315 officejet all inone

Go to www.hp.com/downloads and enter your printer information and look for a driver to download. Make sure you get the correct one for your Operting system. And when you download, turn off all running programs including your virus control. Good Luck.

Hello Liz,

You can accomplish your request two different ways. (Both ways are a little technical and you might need assistance)

1) You can get a wireless adapter for your printer and then configure it as a node. Then print to it as a printer device. (node)

2) (cheaper way) You could connect the printer to a spare pc that is wirelesss. Then share out the printer.

Please feel free to ask any additional questions.

NetGear Wireless G USB 2.0 Issues

Jane -- several things are required for internet access.
Lets go through step by step and assure the pieces are in place.

I will assume you have a second machine working with the router (wired or wireless does not matter). I would like you to try the following on both machines at let me know what happens.

First you can connect to the router and not have access to the internet. This first to determine the IP configuration values are correct for your network. (assumes Windows XP and probably Vista) - using the working machine

Click Start then All Programs the Accessories then Command Prompt a new window will open -- in that window type the following (one space only before the /)

ipconfig /all

and press enter -- record the following in the responses

IP Address --------------- probably 192.168.0.?
Subnet Mask ------------ probably 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway -------- probably 192.168.0.1
DNS Address(es) ------ may be more than 1

on your son's laptop do the same -- you should see the following if the configuration is right.
IIP Address --------------- probably 192.168.0.?
Subnet Mask ------------ same as working machine
Default Gateway -------- same as working machine
DNS Address(es) ------ same as working machine

Now test the connection to the router

in the same window as before enter the following command (replace the 192.168.0.1 with the default gateway from the working machine if different)

ping 192.168.0.1

The working machine should display 4 messages with elapsed times indicating the ping works.

Your son's machine may display 4 timeout messages indicating it does not work. If the ipconfig above is wrong especially in matching areas to the working machine that could explain the problem. It could also be that the adapter requires additional wireless configuration such as a WEP or WPA password or passphrase, or connection to your network name (SSID) if it is hidden.

Please respond to this issue with a comment telling me what matched in the two ipconfigs and whether or not the ping works hopefully yes at least on the working machine and I will probably be able to provide a solution to the problem.

You need: * A wireless-enabled computer. Many computers made over the last three years are already wireless capable, or they can operate wirelessly with adapters. * A wireless router. This will serve as your Wi-Fi access point, the hub of your network. * Broadband Internet access. While you can use your wireless router without any Internet access at all, or use dial-up, experts agree that there?s real value in accessing online content via DSL or cable and making it available to every computer in your house. The cost of doing so, like with the hardware, has dropped dramatically in the past several years. When you set up your network using the wireless router, you?ll need to identify that network on each of your wireless computers and during the installation process for your Lexmark wireless printers or all-in-one devices. You?ll be asked about your service set identifier (SSID), which is basically the name of your network. Don?t forget to consider the security of your network early in your decision process. * Common security types for networks include WEP, WPA and WPA2, and there is usually also an option for no security. At a minimum, you should look for WPA or WPA2 security and follow the manufacturer?s instructions to encrypt your signal and set your own password. A password isn't mandatory, but if you don't use one, it's far easier for others to access your network, and potentially your computer.
